Cameo

Rope Sockets Cameo rope sockets are wireline service tools used to attach either solid or stranded wireline to a wireline tool string. Three types of rope sockets are available: spool, wedge and clamp. Spool-type and wedge-type rope sockets are used with solid wireline, and clamp-type rope sockets are used with stranded wireline.

Spool-type rope sockets, used to attach 0.066" through 0.092" diameter solid

Spool-Type

wireline to a tool string, consist of a housing with a fishing neck on the upper end and a box thread connection on the lower end, The housing contains a spool, a thimble and a spring, The wireline is threaded through the upper end of the housing, the spring and the thimble and is then wrapped around the center of the spool and back around itself. The spring acts as a shock absorber to protect the wireline from jarring impacts, and the thimble centralizes the spool so that force is always applied in a straight line. Wedge-type rope sockets, used to attach 0,108" diameter solid wireline to a fool string, consist of a housing with a fishing neck on the upper end and an adapter

installed in the lower end. The housing contains a wedge and a set screw, and the adapter has a box thread connection on the lower end. The wireline is threaded through the upper end of the housing, wrapped around the wedge

and secured with the set screw, The wedge tits in the upper housing bore to hold the wireline In position. The adapter installed in the lower end of the housing re tains the wedge inside the housing bore. A vertical, semicircular groove is machined in the flat face of each clamp section to accommodate the wireline. The wireline is threaded through the upper end of the housing and

the split clamp and is secured with the six set screws. The adapter installed in the lower end of the housing retains the clamp inside the housing bore.

Wireline Stem Cameo wireline stem, also called weight bars, are wireline service accessories used to add weight to the wireline tool string to counteract the force of wellbore pressure on the cross-sectional area of the wire and to increase the effectiveness

of upward or downward jarring with link or tubular jars. Wireline stem normally consists of a solid bar of alloy steel and has a fishing neck and a pin thread con nection on the upper end and a box thread connection on the lower end. Stem is usually supplied in two-, three- and five-foot lengths.

Knuckle Joints and Knuckle Jars Cameo knuckle joints and knuckle jars are wireline service tools used to provide flexibility at specific points in the wireline tool string. Knuckle jars, which also pro vide short jarring action, are used only in special applications. These tools con sist of a ball and socket assembly that has a fishing neck and a pin thread con nection on the upper end and a box thread connection on the lower end. The knuckle jars' socket is approximately 2" long to allow the ball to move vertically for light jarring. The ball and socket construction permits knuckle joints and knuckle jars to deflect a maximum of 15° and rotate 360°. Knuckle joints are nor mally installed just below the rope socket when 0.108" diameter solid or stranded wireline is used.

Wireline Jars Cameo wireline jars are wireline service tools used to provide a fixed amount of upward or downward jarring movement of the wireline tool string. Three types of wireline jars are available; link, tubular and hydraulic, Link and tubular jars are mechanical jars which accommodate both upward and downward jarring,

These jars deliver a jarring impact through the entire length of the wireline tool string. Hydraulic jars, for upward jarring only, are used to apply a high-impact force.

Link jars consist of two interlocking steel links with a fishing neck and a pin thread connection on the upper end and a box thread connection on the lower end, The interlocking steel links can be extended or collapsed by manipulating the wireline at the surface to produce upward or downward jarring. The intensity of the jarring impact depends on the weight of the wireline stem installed im mediately above the jar, the stroke length of the jar and the density of the well fluid. Tubular jars consist of a tube perforated for fluid bypass and a telescoping rod that moves vertically within the tube. The telescoping rod has a fishing neck and a pin thread connection on the upper end, and the tube has a box thread con

nection on the lower end. The telescoping rod is extended or collapsed within the tube by manipulating the wireline at the surface to produce upward or downward jarring. The intensity of the jarring impact depends on the weight ot the wireline stem installed immediately above the jar, the stroke length of the jar and the density of the well fluid. Because of the tubular construction, these jars

are especially effective in large tubing or casing where link jars are not recommended.

Hydraulic jars consist of a mandrel assembly installed in the upper end of a body assembly. The mandrel assembly has a fishing neck and a pin thread connec

tion on the upper end, and the body assembly has a box thread connection on the lower end. The mandrel assembly has an integral piston which extends into the cylinder of the body assembly. The area between the piston and the cylinder is filled with hydraulic fluid to form a closed hydraulic system which per

mits close control of the jarring impact intensity. Pulling upward on the wireline

at the surface extends the piston and stores energy from the wireline unit in the hydraulic fluid to provide an effective upward impact. A small hole in the piston allows hydraulic fluid bypass which permits the piston to move upward in the

polished section of the cylinder. When the piston reaches the enlarged bore of

the cylinder, pressure above and below the piston equalizes immediately and allows the piston to move rapidly upward to deliver the jarring force.

W Series Running Tools Cameo W series running tools are wireline service tools used to install Cameo M series selective locks and attached subsurface control devices in appropriate Cameo W series selective landing nipples, W series running tools consist of a fishing neck and a pin thread connection on the upper end, a setting rod, springloaded locating dogs, an arming mechanism (pawls or a collet), a core and a skirt housing on the lower end which attaches to the appropriate lock with shear

pins. The design of the W series running tool provides complete selectivity at any depth or in any position. The running tool's arming mechanism, triggered only by upward movement through the chosen selective nipple, releases the springloaded dogs and allows them to expand. Downward movement of the tool string locates the running tool and attached subsurface control device in the selected nipple, downward jarring sets the lock and upward jarring releases the running tool from the lock. W series running tools are internally threaded to receive a prong for equalizing operations.

I

The W running tool series includes W-1, WC-1T and WC-1T-MA running tools. The three running tools share similar features; however, W-1 running tools have pawls as an arming mechanism and WC-1T and WC-1T-MA running tools have collets, Also, WC-1T and WC-1T-MA running tools feature a tattletale device which pro vides a positive indication that the lock has been set. In addition to installing M series locks and attached subsurface control devices. W-1 and WC-1T-MA run ning tools are also used to install M locks attached to Cameo A series blanking

plugs. The 2-1/2" WC-1T-MA, which has a core extension, must have the core ex

Z-5 Series Running Tools Cameo Z-5 series running tools are wireiine service fools used to install Cameo

Z-5 collar locks in collar recesses in the tubing string. Z-5 series running tools con sist of a fishing neck and a pin thread connection on the upper end, an upper

adapter, an inner mandrel, a ratchet assembly, a running prong and a skirt hous ing on the lower end which attaches to the appropriate collar lock with shear pins. The running prong, which is used to set the lock, also attaches to the collar lock's inner sleeve with shear pins. Upward jarring sets the collar lock, and the ratchet assembly captures the inner mandrel and running prong assembly so that downward motion cannot unset the lock. Continued upward jarring releases the prong and the skirt housing from the collar lock.

Z-6 Series Running Tools Cameo Z-6 series running tools are wireline service tools used to install Cameo DB series no-go locks and attached subsurface control devices in Cameo 4" through 7" no-go landing nipples with DB profiles. Z-6 series running tools consist of a fishing neck and a pin thread connection on the upper end, a plunger, a

PRS Series Pulling Tools Cameo PRS series pulling tools are wireline service tools used to retrieve subsur face devices that have internal fishing necks. PRS series pulling tools consist of a fishing neck with a pin thread connection on the upper end, an inner man drel, a collet, a collet core, a collet spring, an emergency release shear pin and

either a core spring for tools through 3-1/2" or a ratchet assembly for tools larger than 3-1/2", In the pulling operation, the collet spring allows the collet to retract around the reduced O.D, of the collet core until the collet fingers pass into the

fishing neck of the device being pulled. The collet spring then extends the collet over the large O.D. of the collet core to securely latch the tool into the fishing neck of the device being pulled. All PRS series pulling fools have a safety shear release

feature which allows the pulling operation to be aborted without retrieving the subsurface device. PRS series pulling tools 3-1/2" and smaller feature reversible safety shear release which is accomplished by either upward or downward jar ring, depending on core spring position. If the core spring is located above the stop on the inner mandrel, downward jarring is required; if the core spring is located below the inner mandrel stop, upward jarring is required. For PRS series pulling tools larger than 3-1/2" safety shear release is accomplished by downward jarring only. Following downward jarring, a ratchet assembly retains the collet core in the released position. Most PRS series pulling tools are internally threaded to receive a prong for equalizing operations.

The PRS pulling tool series includes PRS, PRS-2 and PRS-3 pulling tools. PRS pulling tools require downward jarring for safety shear release, while PRS-2 tools feature reversible safety shear release. PRS-3 pulling tools, which also feature reversible safety shear release, are specifically designed to retrieve Otis D locks.

JD Series Pulling Tools Cameo JD series pulling tools are wireline service tools used to retrieve jar-up-torelease subsurface devices that have external fishing necks, JD series pulling tools

consist of a fishing neck with a pin thread connection on the upper end, a D sub, spring-loaded pulling dogs, a core, a skirt, an emergency release shear pin and two springs, internal and external. Because the D sub connects directly to the skirt instead of the core and the core is shear-pinned to the skirt, JD series pulling tools feature a jar-down-to-release safety shear release which allows the pulling operation to be aborted without retrieving the subsurface device. In the

pulling operation, the external spring allows the dogs \o retract until they expand and latch onto the fishing neck of the subsurface device. If the pulling operation is aborted, the internal spring forces the core upward after downward jarring to retract the dogs completely and release the pulling tool from the subsurface device, JD series pulling tools are available with various core lengths to permit retrieval of subsurface devices with fishing necks that vary in length. Most JD series pulling tools are internally threaded to receive a prong for equalizing operations. Under certain conditions, Ihese pulling tools can also be used as running tools. JD series pulling tool nomenclature Indicates the series of the pulling tool, the

direction of the safety shear release and the core length. The first letter, J, indicates the pulling tool series. The second letter, D, indicates that downward jarring is re quired for safety shear release, The third letter indicates core length: C indicates a long core (which accommodates a short fishing neck), S indicates a mediumlength core (which accommodates a medium-length fishing neck) and L in dicates a short core (which accommodates a long fishing neck). Any letters or numbers following the first three letters indicate variations in one or more of the following specifications: maximum O.D., core length and pin thread connection.

The JD pulling tool series Includes JDC, JDC-1, JDC-2, JDC-TD, JDS, JDS-2 and JDL pulling tools JDC, JDC-1, JDC-2 and JDC-TD puliing tools have long cores; however,

JDC-1 pulling tools have slightly longer cores, JDC-2 pulling tools have larger pin

thread connections and JDC-TD pulling tools have smaller (turned-down) maximum O D's than JDC pulling tools of the same size. Even though JDC-TD pull ing tools have reduced maximum O.DX they require the same minimum working i D for pulling dog expansion as JDC pulling tools of the same size. JDS and JDS-2 pulling tools have medium-length cores; however, all JDS-2 pulling tools except the 1-1/2" JDS-2 have larger pin thread connections than JDS pulling tools of the same size The 1-1/2" JDS-2 has a slightly longer core than standard 1-1/2" JDS pull ing tools Also, the 2" JDS-2 features a bell skirt, which increases the maximum O.D., in addition to a larger pin thread connection. All JDL pulling tools have short cores.

JU Series Pulling Tools ■-

Cameo JU series pulling tools ore wireline service tools used to retrieve jar-downto-release subsurface devices that have external fishing necks. JU series pulling tools consist of a fishing neck with a pin thread connection on the upper end,

a U sub, spring-loaded pulling dogs, a core, a skirt, an emergency release shear pin and two springs, internal and external. Because the U sub connects directly to the core instead of the skirt and the core is shear-pinned to the skirt, JU series pulling tools feature a jar-up-to-release safety shear release which allows the pull ing operation to be aborted without retrieving the subsurface device. In the pull ing operation, the external spring allows the dogs to retract until they expand and latch onto the fishing neck of the subsurface device. If the pulling operation is aborted, the internal spring forces the core and the U sub upward after up ward jarring to retract the dogs completely and release the pulling tool from the subsurface device. JU series pulling tools are available with various core lengths to permit retrieval of subsurface devices with fishing necks that vary in length. Most JU series pulling tools are internally threaded to receive a prong for equaliz ing operations. Under certain conditions, these pulling tools can also be used as running tools.

JU series pulling tool nomenclature indicates the series of the pulling tool, the direction of the safety shear release and the core length. The first letter, J, indicates the pulling tool series. The second letter, U, indicates that upward jarring is re quired for safety shear release. The third letter indicates core length: C indicates a long core (which accommodates a short fishing neck), S indicates a mediumlength core (which accommodates a medium-length fishing neck] and L in dicates a short core [which accommodates a long fishing neck). Any letters or numbers following the first three letters indicate variations in maximum O,D. and pin thread connection.

The JU pulling tool series includes JUG JUC-2, JUC-U, JUC-TD, JUS, JUS-2 and JUL pulling tools. JUC, JUC-2, JUC-U and JUC-TD pulling tools have long cores; however,

JUC-2 pulling tools have larger pin thread connections, JUC-U pulling tools have

slightly smaller maximum O.D.'s and JUC-TD pulling tools have smaller (turneddown) maximum O.D.'s than JUC pulling tools of the same size. Even though JUCU and JUC-TD pulling tools have reduced maximum O.D.'s, they require the same minimum working I.D. for pulling dog expansion as JUC pulling tools of the same

size. Also, the 2" JUC-2 features a bell skirt, which increases the maximum O.D.. in addition to a larger pin thread connection. JUS and JUS-2 pulling tools have medium-length cores; however, JUS-2 pulling tools have larger pin thread con nections than JUS pulling tools of the same size. All JUL pulling tools have short cores.

A-1 Sand Bailers and Hydrostatic Bailers Cameo A-1 sand bailers and hydrostatic bailers are wireline service tools used to remove small debris in the tubing string. A-1 sand bailers are pump-type bailers normally used to remove loose sand and debris, and hydrostatic bailers are nor mally used when strong suction is required to remove debris directly above and around subsurface equipment. A-1 sand bailers consist of a fishing neck and a pin thread connection on the upper end. a ported piston, a ported piston cylinder, a bailer tube a ball retainer and ball check valve and a guide shoe on the lower end The 24-inch stroking movement of the piston draws well fluid and debris through the ball check valve into the bailer tube. The ball check valve retains the debris in the bailer tube, and the well fluid exits the bailer tube through the ported piston and piston cylinder. Hydrostatic bailers consist of a fishing neck and a Din thread connection on the upper end, an atmospheric chamber, a piston secured with a shear pin to a housing at the lower end of the atmospheric chamber, a bailer tube, a ball retainer and boll check valve and a guide shoe on the lower end. Downward jarring on the hydrostatic bailer shears the piston shear pin, and well pressure forces the piston upward. The suction created by the atmospheric pressure in the chamber draws well fluid and debris through

the ball check valve into the bailer tube. When pressure injhe atmospheric chamber equalizes, the boll check valve closes to retain the debris in the tube, Different diameter guide shoes are available for most bailer sizes.

Tubing End Locators Cameo tubing end locators are wireline service tools used to determine the depth of either the bottom of the tubing or a break in the tubing, Tubing end locators consist of a fishing neck and a pin thread connection on the upper end, a body, a spring-loaded finger, a shear pin and a pin thread connection on the lower

end. The spring-loaded finger is compressed within the body until the tool is lowered just past the bottom of the tubing. The finger then rotates outward against the shear pin. As the tool is retrieved, the finger catches on the end of the tubing and registers an increase on the surface weight indicator to indicate the depth.

Continued upward pull shears the pin and compresses the finger to permit the

tool to be retrieved. Tubing end locators are normally used with Cameo sample

bailers to allow a sample of fluid or solids to be taken at the bottom of the well.
