Stagecoach preferred bidder for Eastbourne Stagecoach has been named as the preferred bidder for the Eastbourne Buses municipal operation which operates 45 buses. Historically, the company claims to have been the first municipality in the world to have

run motor buses, having started operating them in 1903. A Stagecoach spokesman said: 'We are pleased to confirm that Stagecoach has been named as preferred bidder for Eastbourne Buses Limited following a

competitive bid process. A final contract is subject to further negotiations, the completion of legal matters and approval by the Department for Transport, and we look forward to meeting with employees in due course.'

Solbus seek new partner The non-appearance of Solbus (UK) Ltd at the Euro Bus Expo exhibition with the Soltour coach and Solcity bus products was as a result of the UK company ceasing trading. Jakub Slizak, MD of Fabryka Autobusow Solbus Sp, the Polish manufacturer that produces the vehicles that had been sold by Solbus (UK), had hoped to appoint another dealership during November but detailed talks with a potential partner have come to nothing. Two Soltour ST10 coaches have been delivered in the UK and 11 more have been completed and are ready for delivery, two of

them the longer 11m Soltour ST11 model. Jakub told B&CB that there were now a number of options, including appointing a new dealership, setting up the company's own dealership in the UK or even selling direct from Poland and appointing local UK service dealers. World's biggest bus order? The Board of Directors of the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai have approved a deal for 1616 new buses, costing £1.53bn (AED8.6bn). It has been claimed that the deal, which involves five, as yet undisclosed bus suppliers, is the biggest bus procurement deal ever made, worldwide. The vehicles will comprise of single deckers, articulated buses

and double deckers. They will meet Euro4 standards and feature I-Shift transmissions as well as ESP vehicle braking and stability systems. On-board, they will be equipped with bus stop announcement technology, a GPS device that tracks buses linked with the RTA Control Centre, as well as external and internal display monitors.

When the deal is complete, the number of buses in Dubai is expected to rise to 2,500 by 2009. There is currently a growing requirement for buses, triggered by the increasing population of the emirate, as well as the need for a bus feeder service to Dubai Metro stations.

Transdev management moves Joel Lebreton has taken over as Chairman and CEO of the Transdev Group, whilst FrancoisXavier Perin becomes Group MD. A number of other moves within the Group have also been made, which come into effect on 1 January 2009. Current UK Chief, Charlie Beaumont, becomes Chief Operating Officer for the newly created Transdev International

region. He will be responsible for the group's operations in the UK, Australia, Italy and Iberia. Based in Paris, he will become a member of the Group Executive Committee. MD of Transdev London, Nigel Stevens, will be promoted to UK Divisional Director and CEO of Transdev plc. He will report to Beaumont and will be responsible for all the group's UK businesses.

Replacing him as London MD will be Paul Matthews, who is currently the company's Operations Director. Charlie Beaumont, said, 'I am confident that Nigel and Paul will continue the success of Transdev in the UK. The continuity of these appointments will provide a firm base for foremost quality public transport operators.'

Shipp slams anti-bus budget Peter Shipp, Chairman of EYMS Group, has expressed anger at proposals in the Government's Pre-Budget report, saying that some of the measures are yet another burden which will have to be faced by the bus and coach industry and its passengers. He commented, 'The Chancellor has added 2p per litre to the cost of our diesel and there is to be a further 2p added in April. Together these will add over £0.33 million to our costs in a full year. The Chancellor said that the duty increase is offset by the reduction in VAT, but he has conveniently forgotten that, whilst this may be true for fuel bought by motorists, it is not true for bus operators as we already reclaim VAT in full. This comes as a bitter disappointment just as we were getting some relief through fuel prices dropping back, although nowhere near down to the price we were paying in 2007.' 'It is no surprise that we have not been told if this additional duty will be refunded to us through the grant that we get for fuel used on

local bus services, and, if the last increase is anything to go by, it will be three months before the Government deigns to tell us. In the meantime we have to assume that we will have to bear these costs in full. We had just decided not to impose the fares increase which was budgeted for this month, as the underlying cost of fuel has been going down, and, although we desperately need the extra revenue, we felt it was not a good time to ask our passengers to pay more. However, in view of this Budget statement we will have to urgently review this decision, and I certainly cannot now rule out another fares increase in the near future.' 'Whatever eventually happens for local buses, the extra duty will certainly have to be paid on coach and express services. The stated intention of the Budget measures is to help the less well off members of our society, but raising bus fares is hardly going to help this objective.' 'Also, hidden away on page 137 of the Pre-Budget report, the

Chancellor announces the decision that sounds likely to affect the basis of that very grant to offset fuel duty that I have referred to. The Government has opted for a decision to link the grant with bus companies' investment in Smart Card and GPS systems, but that strongly suggests that either the grant will be cut for operators who do not invest in these systems, or just might increase for those who do -

but to get the higher rate of grant operators will have to spend big sums of money on these systems which are certainly not cheap. Fortunately EYMS has already made this investment so we may be better placed than some, but this could be another nail in the coffin of many much smaller bus operators who simply cannot afford, and do not need to invest in, these high-tech measures.'

Bluestar 18 gains 19% passenger growth Eastleigh based Bluestar have achieved 19% passenger growth on their 18 route, which runs through Southampton city centre from Thornhill and Bitterne to Shirley and Millbrook. The company believes the introduction of a daytime service every 10 minutes, set to a standard, simple route and timetable, have made the service more attractive to those who would normally not use the bus. They believe night buses on Fridays and Saturdays has also contributed to the rise in customers. Bluestar Operations Director, Andrew Wickham, said, 'The changes have proved popular and not just to the over sixties who use their concessionary passes, as 23% of the new passengers are full fare paying.'

TfL improves coach parking TfL have made a number of improvements for on-street coach parking in London. The changes come after a public consultation on parking facilities near tourist attractions, hotels and theatres on the TfL Road Network (TLRN). Following the consultation, three new bays have been introduced in the capital. One of the new bays is situated in Bridge Place, just behind Victoria Station. A new set down and pick up bay has been placed on the west side of the Millbank, close to the entrance of the Tate

Britain. Another parking space has been introduced on the east side of Millbank, where coaches can park for free for up to one hour. The operating times of an existing loading bay in Buckingham Palace Road, outside of the Thistle Hotel, have been extended to 24 hours. Parking facilities for The Grosvenor House Hotel have been enhanced too. It is now possible to use the two vehicle bay at any time, 24 hours a day, for a maximum of 20 minutes.

Hookways still use Dorset Queen name Alastair Gray, MD of Hookways Coaches has asked us to point out that, further to our news item on page eight of our 14 November issue, his company continues to use and promote the Dorset Queen name following its acquisition with the business on 1 January 2004. The original depot has been closed but the holiday

programme offered throughout Dorset is marketed as 'Hookways incorporating Dorset Queen.' Other names of acquired companies, including Greenslades of Exeter, Jennings of Bude and Classic Tours of Paignton have also been retained. There is no link between Hookways and Roadliner Passenger Transport of Poole.

Go North East extends Bargain Bus Go North East have teamed up with Blyth based Phoenix Taxis to give its Bargain Bus users the chance to pay for a taxi in advance at the start or finish of their bus journey. The operator claims that this is the first partnership of its kind in the region. The development is part of a series of improvements to the Bargain Bus services. A further enhancement includes the addition of two new routes, one of which is the X44, that travels to Morpeth via Stannington station and Stobhill. The other is the X45, which goes to Ashington via Stannington village, Loansdean, Morpeth and Pegswood. Both operate from Newcastle's Haymarket Bus Station and will provide a half hourly service to Morpeth. Additionally, low floor Plaxton bodied VDL SB220 single deckers have been introduced for most journeys on the routes. Brand new bargain fares are to be offered, with a £4 day and a £14 weekly ticket available.

Dear Sir, I know you do not normally have a letters page in Bus & Coach Buyer, but I would like to briefly comment on the caption to the UK North bus photo which accompanied a Probus piece on the new Transport Act in your 7 November edition. The caption says that there are relatively few bad operators, but the powers to act against them are already in place. I agree, but the use of a UK North bus photo to illustrate this point is perhaps apposite since the authorities took an enormously long time to use those powers to sort out this particular operator. Our Finglands subsidiary bore the brunt of UK North's activities over many years, and despite many formal complaints to the Traffic Commissioner and the PTE

about their activities, it took far too long for this truly rogue operator to be taken off the road. In view of what finally happened, I believe there may have been other factors at play, but the fact remains that this operator flouted the rules for far too long and more than any other operator I can recall, and did enormous damage not only to their competitors but also to the reputation of the bus industry as a whole. That UK North were still operating at the time of the Labour Party Conference in Manchester was an absolute gift to those at the Conference who were calling for reregulation. Groupe Lacroix ust as bus operations in the UK are dominated by big groups, much of the French bus market is in the hands of a small number of large companies, most of which also have interests in the UK. And, just as we have our trentbarton, EYMS, Rotala, and similar independent operations, so France has its larger private operators. One of these is Groupe Lacroix, which has developed from very humble beginnings in the private hire market to operate 450 buses and coaches, including one of the biggest Setra fleets in France.

Origins The company's origins can be said to have started to 1953 with Henry Lacroix. He owned a boat building operation that was not doing particularly well and also had a Volkswagen minibus. Out of the blue he was asked by a travel agency to take a party to Scandinavia in the VW and found he enjoyed doing it. Giving up his previous profession, he continued to run on his own for a few years before taking on extra vehicles and drivers and forming Cars Lacroix in 1963. Around 1969/1970, Transport Citroen, a bus company owned by the Citroen car company was bought along with a few bus services. By 1973 Henri had 19 vehicles, still used predominantly on private hire. All were parked in the back yard of his house

Fastrack astrack was the winner of the innovation and infrastructure awards at last year's UK Bus Awards. This year the conference to announce the shortlist for this year's awards was held at Dartford in Kent and delegates were given the opportunity to see the system operating and how it is to be developed. The whole ethos of Fastrack is to provide high quality bus services that give a real alternative to using the car in one of the largest areas of urban regeneration in Europe. The area is today called Ebbsfleet but most people will know it as the swath of land along the edge of the Thames in the area of Dartford, Greenhithe and Gravesend, where the M25 crosses the Thames via the Queen Elizabeth 2 bridge and the Dartford tunnels. An example of the co-operation that exists between the operator, Kent County Council, the developers and the Police is the fact that the police use the services to move officers around the area and also as a deterrent against trouble on the buses. VDO launch improved tachograph data manager

New LED Bodyside Indicator from BMAC

TIS-Web 3 is a new version of VDO's data management solution for downloading, analysing and archiving both digital and analogue tachographs. It features a new interface to make everyday data management tasks easier and quicker. For approximately 80p a week, the device highlights driver infringements, downloads the contents of cards, reads analogue charts and analyses all of the data. The technology can be used to ensure drivers are adhering to legislation and can help optimise vehicle use. A starter kit is available, consisting of a Download Key II, Smart Card Reader and free TIS-Web Software. A free three-month trial of the system is available from www.dtco.co.uk. BMAC Limited have released a newly designed Bodyside Indicator, designed to ensure manoeuvring vehicles are more visible to pedestrians and other road users. The light features robust, high power LEDs as its light source, which provide ten times more light down the flank of the vehicle than previous versions. According to the company, the light lasts up to 50 times longer than traditional 21 watt bulbs. The indicator is easily installed using three screws and is protected against water and dirt. Somerstotalkare help keep customers happy Mullany's Coaches of Watford have recently invested in additional Somerstotalkare S6ng mobile lifting columns to help maintain their company ethos of keeping customers happy. The operator's workshop caters for its own 35 strong fleet and is also used for carrying out service and MOTs for other PSV and heavy goods vehicle operators. The S6ng lifts, which have a capacity of 7.5 tonnes, are light and easily manoeuvrable and can be configured into sets of four, six and eight. Additionally, Somerstotalkare have announced that they have been appointed as the UK agents for the supply of service and spare parts for German vehicle lift company Hetra Gmb. CPC training aid for handling luggage 'Handling luggage: reducing the risk of injury' is the title of a new CPC training aid from The Association of Trainers, in conjunction with Scriptographic publications. Litelogic signs deal with Arriva Litelogic, suppliers of digital advertising solutions, have signed an agreement with Arriva to provide eight Evolution custom LED screen panels for the company's buses in Darlington and Derby. The high resolution digital outdoor advertising billboards are fitted with GPS technology and can be designed to fit various sizes and formats. The system is powered by the Litecast software platform, which enables advertisers to buy, schedule and upload advertising instantly via a secure web interface. Travel Wright's first Setra Newark's Travel Wright have bought their first Setra, a 12.2m S415GT HD ComfortClass, featuring a Mercedes-Benz OM 457 LA 428hp Euro4 engine coupled with a ZF AS-Tronic 12-speed semi-automatic gearbox. It has a number of safety features, including ESP, Brake Assist and EBS. The 49-seater has a centre sunken toilet, Webasto heating, ComAir roof mounted air conditioning and a Coach 2000 multi-media system. The coach was supplied by Setra Coach Sales.

Comet’s Excel Varios and Crafters Two MercedesBenz Vario 813 luxury minicoaches and two Volkswagen Crafter conversions have entered service with Comet Car Hire. The Varios have 20 luxury seats, a huge dropwell boot and air conditioning, along with panoramic windows and full body kit. The Volkswagens have 16 high back seats, a large boot, full air conditioning and panoramic windows. The vehicles were converted by Excel Conversions of Doncaster.

Short Van Hool Alicrons for City Circle Four 10.5m Van Hool Alicron T911s have been added to City Circle's fleet. The identical vehicles are powered by Euro5 DAF PR 265 S2 engines, producing 360hp, driven through a six-speed automatic gearbox. 36 reclining seats have been fitted, with a rear floor mounted wash room, fridge, hot drinks machine, air conditioning and courier seat. The onboard LCD screen is capable of showing DVD and satellite navigation displays. The coach was supplied by Arriva Bus and Coach of Cleckheaton.

B7R for O'Connors O'Connors Coach Hire of Bandon, Co Cork, have taken delivery of a Volvo B7R Sunsundegui Sideral 10. The 10.3m coach is powered by Volvo's Euro4 engine rated at 290hp and is matched to a six-speed automatic gearbox. It features 43 seats, an entertainment package, Bluetooth hands free mobile phone installation and GPS navigation. The vehicle was supplied by Volvo Coach Sales of Loughborough.

Crafter for Airparks Airport shuttle service, Airparks, have taken delivery of a minibus converted Volkswagen Crafter cr50. The vehicle is the extra long wheelbase version, featuring 16 seats and has a large boot for the luggage it will be carrying from airports. The minibus was supplied by Excel Conversions.

Richmonds Coaches receives B12B Alicron Richmonds Coaches of Royston, Hertfordshire, have added a 12.15m Van Hool Alizee T9 Alicron to their fleet. Based on the Volvo B12B chassis, it is specified with a 420bhp Euro4 rear mounted engine matched to an I-Shift gearbox with intarder. It features 53 Royal class seats, DDA compliant step strips and handrails, entertainment system, ASR traction control, as well as Sutrak air conditioning and Webasto heater. Plaxton Volvo for Longstaff's One of the first production Euro5 Volvo B12Bs, has been delivered to Longstaff's Coaches of Amble. The 49-seat Plaxton Panther bodied coach is powered by a 420bhp engine matched to an I-Shift gearbox and features air conditioning. It has a personalised number plate, bearing the letters EL, the initials of owner Fred Longstaff's son. The coach was supplied by Plaxton Coach Sales of Anston.

Beluga for Mid-Devon Coaches A Mercedes-Benz 0816DT Sitcar Beluga II luxury midicoach is a new addition for Mid-Devon Coaches of Bow, Devon. It is fitted with a 157bhp Euro4 engine with a six-speed manual gearbox. It features a Telma CC80 retarder with hand and foot control, as well as an entertainment system, Pannier lockers, 27 Politecnica reclining seats and Sutrak air conditioning. The midicoach was supplied by Moseley in the South Ltd.

Solos are a first for Lothian Buses Lothian Buses have added six new 9.6m Optare Solo SRs to their fleet, the first of this kind of vehicle to enter service with the company. They are fitted with Euro5 MAN engines matched with Allison 2100 Series gearboxes. They will run on the MacTour routes 60, 61 and 69 and were supplied by Optare Sales.

Setras for West End Travel Two Setra ComfortClass coaches have been bought by Leicestershire's West End Travel. One is a 12m S415GT HD fitted with the MercedesBenz OM 457 LA 428hp Euro4 engine matched to a ZF AS-Tronic 12 speed semi-automatic gearbox and has 49 Nimbus seats. The other is a 13.02m tri-axle S416GT HD, fitted with the same specification as the S415GT HD. With 49 seats, extra legroom is achieved through its additional length. A safety feature of the vehicle is Proximity Distance Control. The coaches were supplied by Setra Coach Sales.

Bova Magiq and Alizee B12B for Brookline Brookline Coaches Ltd of West Malling, Kent, have received a 13.1m VDL Bova Magiq 131.460 MX, featuring a 460bhp DAF MX Euro5 engine coupled with a ZF AS-Tronic transmission with integral retarder. The coach has ASR traction control, cruise control and a reversing camera. The interior specification includes 53 Vogel Conturo reclining seats, tip up tables, entertainment system and water boiler and cooler. The vehicle has air conditioning with additional heater and a Webasto heater. The new vehicle is seen alongside a pre-owned Volvo B12B Van Hool Alizee T9 supplied at the same time. The coach was supplied by Moseley in the South Ltd.
