Please join us following worship for fellowship in the Social Room. Thank you for turning off your cell phones, pagers, cameras, and other electronic devices for the duration of morning worship.

Preparation for Worship “Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with brotherly affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Never flag in zeal, be aglow with the Spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in your hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” ~Romans 12:9-13 (RSV)

Jesus Christ, you come to transfigure us and renew us in the image of God: shine in our darkness. Jesus Christ, light of our hearts, you know our thirst: lead us to the wellspring of your gospel. Jesus Christ, light of the world, you shine in every human being: enable us to discern your presence in each person. Jesus Christ, friend of the poor: open in us the gates of simplicity so that we can welcome you. Jesus Christ, gentle and humble of heart: renew us in the spirit of childhood. Jesus Christ, you send your church to prepare your path in the world: open for all people the gates of your kingdom. Amen. †Please stand for these parts of the service.

†PRAYER OF CONFESSION Eternal God, in every age you have raised up men and women to live and die in faith. We confess that we are indifferent to your will. You call us to proclaim your name, but we are silent. You call us to do what is just, but we remain idle. You call us to live faithfully, but we are afraid. In your mercy, forgive us. Give us courage to follow in your way, that joined with those from ages past, who have served you with faith, hope, and love, we may inherit the kingdom you promised in Jesus Christ. OFFERING ANTHEM

Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven

William Ringham

Chancel Choir Audrey Tillack, soprano

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; to His feet thy tribute bring; Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, evermore His praises sing: Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise the everlasting King. Praise Him for His grace and favor to His people in distress. Praise Him still the same as ever, slow to chide and quick to bless: Alleluia! Alleluia! Glorious in His faithfulness. Father-like, He tends and spares us; well our feeble frame He knows; In His hands He gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes. Alleluia! Alleluia! Widely yet His mercy flows. Angels help us to adore Him: ye behold Him face to face; Sun and moon bow down before Him, dwellers all in tame and space. Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise with us the God of grace. – Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847) Based on Psalm 103

DISCIPLESHIP

MUSIC NOTES: Theodore Dubois served as

the organist at The Church of the Madeleine in Paris. Dubois composed several works for organ, but his oratorio The Seven Last Words of Christ is his most famous composition. Both movements of his Prelude and Fugue begin quietly and build to almost full organ. Our Junior Choir sings an piece from a collection of seasonal anthems. Today’s chorister anthem is based on a Thanksgiving theme. The choral anthem is a new setting on a historic hymn tune by William Ringham, who is the Director of Music at Mission Del Sol Presbyterian Church in Tempe, Arizona. The text of this Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven appeared around 1834, written by Scottish poet Henry Lyte. Marcel Dupré was a student of Guilmant, Vierne, and Widor and succeeded Widor at the church of St. Sulpice in Paris. His Fugue had its origins as an improvisation which he later published. The double fugue’s theme is based on the dismissal chant sung at Easter: Ite Missa est, Alleluia! (The Mass has ended, Alleluia!). HEARING AIDS AND LARGE PRINT HYMNALS

are available from the ushers.

THE SERVICE IS BROADCAST LIVE on WLES 590 AM.

MISSION ADVENTURE FOR OUR CHILDREN!

Donald Marsden will be joining us for our missions weekend on Sunday, October 25. He will be taking our children in grades K through 6 on an imaginative mission excursion during the Sunday school hour. Donald Marsden is an associate director of Presbyterian Frontier Fellowship. From 1997-2008, he and his family served as missionaries of the Presbyterian Church USA in Russia. Part of Donald’s work in Russia was to assist in the spread of the gospel among the Nenets reindeer herding people and other non-Russian peoples of Siberia. Presbyterian Frontier Fellowship encourages congregations to become involved in Frontier mission–helping to spread the gospel among people groups, who have no church. The vision of Presbyterian Fellowship is “For every people group-an indigenous church, for every church-a mission vision.” Infants–Nursery, main level; Toddlers–Room 102; Preschoolers–Room 101; Grades 1-6 –Rooms 207-210. CHILDREN’S

Sunday, October 25, the adult Sunday school classes will have the opportunity to meet together with one of the guest mission speakers at 9:30 a.m. GLOBAL MISSIONS AWARENESS WEEKEND!

An Affirmation of Mission adopted by the officers in February 1999 states the reason for Grace Covenant’s existence. One of them is to love our neighbors as ourselves. We do this by helping people in need and by supporting missionaries in their efforts to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In John 3:16, Jesus says to Nicodemus, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Why should we have concern for our neighbors? The answer, of course, is because God so loved the world that he allowed his Son to be sacrificed for us, all of us. The committee invites you to attend a Global Missions Awareness Weekend from Saturday, October 24 through Sunday, October 25. Informative and exciting speakers (such as John F. Fletcher, who served as senior pastor in Sterling, Virginia for 34 years, before stepping down in 2006 to become Ambassador-at-Large of Pioneers; Elizabeth Gee, a native of Denmark, South Carolina, and who has served with Pioneers in Indonesia training; and Arlene Richardson,

who is a native of Richmond, whose parents founded Pioneers, and she and her spouse joined Pioneers as career missionaries and were involved in ministry to Muslims in Southeast Asia) will help us understand what this means for us at Grace Covenant. It is hoped that at the end of this weekend all of us will have a new knowledge and understanding of the importance of participating in mission efforts. The Evangelism and Missions committee will host a luncheon after the Worship Service on October 25. The committee asks that members, whose last name begins with A-R, bring a salad, and all other members, whose name begins with S-Z, bring a dessert for Sunday’s luncheon. We hope you will join us for this time of fellowship and good food. RSVP on the sign up sheet in the Narthex, or by calling Joy Nevin, 784-2046, by Thursday, October 22; the cost of the boxed lunch on Saturday is $10. There is no charge for Sunday’s luncheon. On Saturday, childcare will be provided for children under 5 years old. FIVE CENTS PER MEAL: On the first Sunday of

the month, we receive the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper, and, in gratitude for what God has given us, we have a hunger offering, Five Cents Per Meal. To contribute, use a pew envelope and mark it “Five Cents Per Meal” (or simply drop in loose change), and put it in the offering. FOOD NEEDED FOR WILLIAM BYRD COMMUNITY HOUSE: Food donations may

be left in the basket in the Glass Office (the office on the main floor of the Education Building, near the rear doors). Please consider giving.

PRISON MINISTRY: Please gather your

Christmas cards to be donated to Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt, Virginia. A collection box is located in the Presbyterian Women’s closet, which is in the Social Room. We will deliver the cards to the center the first week of December. Thank you, in advance, for your caring and generous help! HONDURAS 2010: The next mission trip to

Honduras is scheduled for January 10-16, 2010. Those who may be interested in participating in the 2010 mission trip may check out our website, www.KHISH.org (That’s Kurtz Humanitarian Initiative for Southern Honduras, named for the founder of this effort, which began in 2005). Susan Pillsbury David ([email protected]) or Cherry Corley ([email protected]) can answer your questions about how you many find your place on our team.
