SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

TODAY’S FOCUS – Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time: Paul assures us that we can trust God and his promise of life everlasting in heaven. Jesus, God’s only Son, made this possible by sacrificing his life on the Cross to reconcile us with the Father. Now, we are to show Jesus that we truly want everlasting life by following his commands; humbly loving God and loving one another. SCRIPTURE READINGS We need God’s Word each day. SEASON OF LENT Ash Wednesday Feb. 25th — Holy Saturday March 11th Liturgically, Lent begins with Ash Wednesday and ends on Thursday of Holy Week when the Holy Triduum begins. The Holy Triduum includes Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. Lent is for us a time of renewal, conversion, penance and reparation. Christian penance traditionally involves prayer, fasting, and works of charity. In our times it may be appropriate, even necessary, in many instances to put less emphasis on fasting and more on penance which includes prayer, receiving the sacraments and in doing charitable works. But the witness of Scripture and the life of the Church will not let us abandon corporal penances. Fasting and abstinence are encouraged in Lent. LENTEN REGULATIONS—FAST AND ABSTINENCE The fifth precept of the Church binds Catholics to observe the prescribed days of fast and abstinence. This is intended to establish the minimum response of a faithful Catholic to the Lord’s call to repentance, conversion and penance. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the days of Fast. Catholics who are 18 years old but not yet 59 are obliged to Fast, that is take only one full meal and two lesser meals, with nothing to eat between meals. Drinking fluids would not be contrary to the practice of fasting. Ash Wednesday, the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday are the days of Abstinence. All Catholics who are 14 years old and older are obliged to abstain from eating meat. Catholics have a serious obligation to join together in the common observance of the above days of fast and abstinence. No one should be scrupulous in this regard, but neither should they excuse themselves for any light reason. People who are not able to practice bodily penance, perhaps due to pregnancy, illness or having to do hard physical labor should choose a different work of penance or of charity. It would be ideal if works of penance were linked to works of charity, for example, if the money saved by eating less or less expensive meals would be given in charity to feed the poor. ***All the Fridays of the year are days of penance, in commemoration of the Lord’s Passion, but they are not necessarily days of fast and abstinence. On these days it is left to the choice of each individual Catholic to practice some work of penance—which could be fasting or abstaining from meat—or a work of charity. On Ash Wednesday, the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday, however, Catholics are obliged to practice fasting and/or abstaining specifically.***

REFLECTIONS ON LIFE The framers of the Declaration of Independence asserted that all human beings have inalienable rights, bestowed on them not by any human power, but by their Creator. Those who hold a more exclusionary view need to explain why we should divide humanity into those who have moral value and those who do not. This moral line-drawing poses a serious threat to the dignity and rights of other poor and vulnerable members of the human family who need and deserve our respect and protection.

FREE & EASY WAYS TO HELP SMC—w/o Spending Money There are several ways to support our schools financially without spending additional dollars. These fundraisers will not replace our other efforts, but they do help our schools and programs: KTCCU—account holders can pick up Panther Debit Cards. One cent per transaction benefits the Booster Club GoodSearch Search Engine--using the Yahoo browser www.goodsearch.com donates one cent for each search. Ron’s IGA—bring your receipts to the school or church office until March 31st. Campbell’s Soup Labels—tear them off and turn them into the school or church office. General Mills—Box Tops for Education Target Card—Designate our school as your charity of choice and use your card. There are so many businesses which support our schools in so many ways. We thank them all for helping to make our Catholic school so successful.

Please remember to name Our Lady of Lourdes or St. Mary’s Colgan Schools in your will. May we leave a legacy of faith and education for the generations to come. Please consider informing Fr. Tom or the parish office of your legacy plans, [email protected]

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS Forgiveness, too, is a gift from God. Freed from the paralysis of sin, the man in today’s Gospel was able to stand and give witness to the power of God. How do I let sin cripple me? Am I a good steward of the gift of God’s forgiveness?

VOCATION PRAYER Lord Jesus, together with Mary your most holy mother, who stood beside you in the hour of your redeeming sacrifice, we pray that many youths may have the courage and the humility, the fidelity and the love to answer “Yes” to your invitation, just as Mary did when call to collaborate in the mission of redemption.
