Fifth Sunday In Lent March 29, 2009

You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool; you can spit at him and kill him for a demon; or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronising nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to. — C.S. Lewis

We are missional Anglicans seeking the kingdom of God in our hearts, our homes, our church and our world.

Sunday Mornings @ Good Shepherd Worship 9:00 Hospitality 10:30 Discipleship Hour 11:00

PRAYER If you would like personal prayer this morning for any reason, please make your way to the hallway during communion. One of our intercessors would be honored to pray with or for you.

The Opening Acclamation Celebrant: Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. People: And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen.

The Hymn In Procession O Worship the King O worship the King, all glorious above And gratefully sing His wonderful love Our shield and defender the Ancient of Days Pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise O tell of his might, O sing of His grace Whose robe is the light, whose canopy space His chariots of wrath the deep thunder-clouds form And dark is his path on the wings of the storm. Thy bountiful care what tongue can recite It breathes in the air it shines in the light It streams from the hills it descends to the plain And sweetly distills in the dew and the rain Frail children of the dust, and feeble as frail In Thee do we trust, nor find Thee to fail Thy mercies how tender how firm to the end Our maker defender redeemer and friend

5

The Decalogue Celebrant: Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins. People: His mercy endures forever. Hear the commandments of God to his people: I am the Lord your God who brought you out of bondage. You shall have no other gods but me.

Lord have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law. You shall not make for yourself any idol.

Amen. Lord have mercy. You shall not invoke the Name of the Lord your God in vain.

Lord have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law. Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.

Amen. Lord have mercy. Honor your father and your mother.

Lord have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law. You shall not commit murder.

Amen. Lord have mercy. You shall not commit adultery.

Lord have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law. You shall not steal.

Amen. Lord have mercy. You shall not be a false witness.

Lord have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law. You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor.

Amen. Lord have mercy. Celebrant: Jesus said, "The first commandment is this: Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is the only Lord. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind, and with all your strength. And the second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” 6

The Collect of the Day Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Let us pray. Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the swift and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen Please be seated.

The First Lesson: Jeremiah 31:31-34 Lector: People:

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Psalm The psalm will be read as prompted by the Lector.

Psalm 51 1Have mercy on me, O God,

according to your steadfast love; * according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. 2Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, * and cleanse me from my sin. 3For I know my transgressions, * and my sin is ever before me. 4Against you, you alone, have I sinned, and done what is evil in your sight, * so that you are justified in your sentence and blameless when you pass judgement. 5Indeed, I was born guilty, * a sinner when my mother conceived me. 6You desire truth in the inward being; * therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart. 7Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; * wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8Let me hear joy and gladness; * let the bones that you have crushed rejoice. 9Hide your face from my sins, * and blot out all my iniquities. 10Create in me a clean heart, O God, * and put a new and right spirit within me. 11Do not cast me away from your presence, * and do not take your holy spirit from me. 12Restore to me the joy of your salvation, * and sustain in me a willing spirit. 13Then I will teach transgressors your ways, * and sinners will return to you. 14Deliver me from bloodshed, O God, O God of my salvation, * and my tongue will sing aloud of your deliverance. 15O Lord, open my lips, * and my mouth will declare your praise. 16For you have no delight in sacrifice; * if I were to give a burnt-offering, you would not be pleased. 17The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit; * a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. 18Do good to Zion in your good pleasure; * rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, 19then you will delight in right sacrifices, in burnt-offerings and whole burnt-offerings; * then bulls will be offered on your altar. 8

The Sermon Please be seated.

The Nicene Creed Please stand.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Leader and People pray responsively.

Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church;

That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you;

That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons;

That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world;

That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake;

That our works may find favor in your sight. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble;

That they may be delivered from their distress. Give to the departed eternal rest.

Let light perpetual shine upon them. We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy;

May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others. Please offer your prayers of intercession and thanksgiving, either silently or aloud.

12

The Confession of Sin And now, O Father, we pray to you also for our greatest need, the forgiveness of our sins:

Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; in your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things done and left undone; and so uphold us by your Spirit that we may live and serve you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Priest: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

The Peace Celebrant: May the peace of the Lord be always with you. People: And also with you.
