Books for Africa
In This Season of Giving, Give a Book By Stafford L. Battle
B
uilding a bridge from misery to hope often can be best accomplished by the simplest of actions such as the donation of used books to people who lack them. This act can help spread President-elect Barack Obama’s message of hope and change by improving literacy in places where books are scarce.

“Books for Africa” founded by Tom Warth has shipped more than 20 million books to Africa. It costs about 40 cents to send a book and more than 35 kids will read that one book. Yet despite that tremendous effort, today, many African schools and libraries in the rural areas still have bare shelves where books should be sitting. The Black Author Showcase is working with Books for Africa via the “Bring a Book and a Buck” campaign on December 13th at the Show Place Arena to collect and ship books to Kenya. Diane Williams cofounder of the Black Author Showcase reveals that, “In this historic election year, when our president-elect has direct family ties to Kenya, we consider it an honor and civic duty to help spread a message of hope and change via literacy.” Many unwanted books in America are thrown away or buried in landfills. Ecologically and ethically, it makes perfect sense to donate the knowledge in those books to children who can become better educated citizens and help end the scourge of poverty and disease in their homeland and around the world. The next Benjamin Banneker or Albert Einstein may be living in a small grass hut in Africa waiting for a chance to learn and mature. Despite America’s current economic concerns, the U.S. remains the richest country in the world with a generous abundance of books idle in warehouses, supply closets and attics. On December 13, the residents of Prince George’s County are offered the opportunity to get involved in the spirit of giving as well as participate in creation of a better world for all of us. ✍
