What is Bird Flu?

 Is an infection caused by avian influenza viruses  The subtype of influenza A virus, H5N1 virus, is responsible for bird flu

Bird Flu: The H5N1 Virus • Among the influenza viruses type A is most deadly to humans. • Bird Flu: H5N1 virus result from antigenic shift from poultry to human or when poultry and human viruses combine to form a completely different subtype.

Transmission  Transmitted via saliva, nasal secretions and feces of infected birds.  Spread to humans by contact with infected bird.  The infection is not easily transmitted from human to human but it is possible

Symptoms  Symptoms include fever, sore throat, cough, muscle aches etc. (Flu-like symptoms)  These symptoms can progress to eye infections, pneumonia and respiratory infections that lead to death

Population At Risk

 Healthcare workers are at a high risk  People working at poultry farm  “Most cases have occurred in previously healthy children and young adults.”

Protect Yourself  Wash your hands frequently  Wear the N95 surgical mask Avoid unnecessary contact or travel during possible outbreak
