What is biotechnology? Biotechnology is a popular term for the generic technology of the 21st century. Although it has been utilized for centuries in traditional production processes, modern biotechnology is only 50 years old and in the last decades it has been witnessing tremendous developments. Bioengineering is the science upon which all Biotechnological applications are based. With the development of new approaches and modern techniques, traditional biotechnology industries are also acquiring new horizons enabling them to improve the quality of their products and increase the productivity of their systems.
Cite the importance of biotechnology. Biotechnology helps in maintaining the ecological balance with the aid of natural beings like for example acidophiles, in cleaning the pollutants in the environment in the natural way. Unlike the oher technological remedies, the application of biotechnology is it is doing its course on the natural way.
The people who contribute in the field of Biotechnology James Watson and Francis Crick – they presented their double-helix of the DNA. Werner Arber – discovered the special enzymes, called restriction enzymes, in bacteria. Stanley Cohen and Herbert Boyer - removed a specific gene from one bacterium and inserted it into another using restriction enzymes. This event marked the beginning of recombinant DNA technology, commonly called genetic engineering. Norman Borlaug - used hybridization followed by selective breeding to increase food production and quality of wheat and rice crops.
