• A relatively stable set of characteristics, tendencies, and traits.



Set of predictable behaviors by which people are recognized and identified.

Trait: A specific component of personality that describes particular tendencies a person has to feel, think, and act in certain ways.

• Personality interacts with the situation to influence behavior.

• Personality can help predict job performance. • Measurement of psychopathology vs. normal Personality.

Personality is represented by 5 traits (factors):  Openness  Conscientiousness  Extraversion  Agreeableness  Negative emotions 



This five factor model is also called OCEAN model.

facets:  Remember “OCEAN” of personality  Facets are more specific personality characteristic.

• Extraversion: the degree of sociability of a person. • Facets: Gregariousness, Activity, ExcitementSeeking, Positive Emotions, Assertiveness. • Example :  I am dominant, forceful, and assertive.

• Agreeableness: the degree of courtesy, trusting, cooperation, and tolerance a person exhibits. • Facets: Straightforwardness, Modesty, Altruism, Compliance, Trust. • Example: I’m suspicious of someone that does something nice for me.

• Neurotic individuals tend to lack emotional adjustment. • Facets: Anxiety, Anger, Depression, Vulnerability, Impulsiveness. • Example: When I am having my favorite foods, I tend to eat too much.

• Conscientiousness: the degree of organization, dependability, and achievement-orientation. • Facets: Competence, Order, Dutifulness, Achievement-Striving, Self-Discipline, Deliberation  Example: Over the years I’ve done some pretty stupid things.

• Those high in openness tend to be more curious, imaginative, playful, and artistically inclined than others. • Facets: Fantasy, Aesthetics, Feelings, Ideas, Actions • Example: On a vacation, I prefer to go back to a tried and true spot.
