BASIC VS APPLIED RESEARCH

After reading C.H. Llewellyn Smith’s explanation about the basic and applied science, I learned that both of them are really important and has a big impact for our society. Based on what I’ve read, basic science is motivated by our own curiosity. It means that we choose basic science to expand our knowledge and satisfy our curiosity. Basic science is like the foundation and it can be a reference for applied research. Now applied research is designed to answer specific questions. Basic research is the roots and applied research will be the growing tree. They are both equally important because basic research can help the researchers to accomplish and make their applied research more accurate. Applied research can be a big help when it comes to our community because it can also improve when it comes to medicine, technology, economy and etc.

As we all know, people in the Philippines don’t really focus or acknowledge researchers that much. Even the government itself does not really focus on researches. We may be advancing when it comes to research but it is advancing slowly unlike in other countries. And even our outstanding researches work abroad because they can be more acknowledged there. The author obviously stands for the basic research. Llewellyn Smith wanted to prove that basic research is as important as the search for solutions to specific problems. The author even stated the benefits of the basic research, there are four: contributions to culture, the possibility of discoveries of enormous economic and practical importance, spin-offs and stimulation of industry, and education. The author even stands that basic research is important culturally and economically. That the public funding should be primarily directed to basic, rather than applied science.

The author talked about basic research subscribe to the so-called “linear model” where basic research is supposed to lead to applied research, which can lead to industrial development and then into product. There are some researches that didn’t go through basic research. The advantages of basic science is that it can help in economics, culture, industry and education. Basic research can lead to many things because it is the reference of other applied researches. Llewellyn argued that the government should fund the basic science. The government should acknowledge researches because it could improve the community. Not individually.

For me, the author made sense. Therefore I agree with the author. Basic science plays a big role when it comes to research and it comes with many benefits. Basic science should be more appreciated not just be tossed aside because other people thinks that applied science is more useful. When in fact, basic science is a big help to improve applied researches. Especially when the author argued that the government should support the basic science and once they fund for it, they should continuously fund it and support the outcome.
