In earlier tutorial we have discussed of advanced feature like bend normals. However, there are very many people who are relatively new and do not understand normals
Display>>polygon>>face normals
The above will only be seen if the Double sided is not selected (by default Double sided is selected)

In the render, it will seem as if the faces did not exist, and the normals were not facing outwards towards the camera.

We can edit these normals manually using Normal>>Vertex normal edit tool
Notice how the objects's shading automatically changes, even thought we have not edited the mesh. Hence in a nut‐shell, normals help us getting the desired look, this look is "by default" and based on the object shape. There are time however that we may choose to alter this.
We can have a high resolution mesh look be transferred to a low resolution mesh using transfer Maps

This will compare the object and save out a normal map
This normal map can be assigned (at the transfer process itself or later) to the lower resolution object. When applied the look of the lower res object is very close to that of the high resolution object.
