Forbidden Joe Think cranking rock 'n' roll riffs, moving into Afro-Cuban grooves, to funky beats straight out of the late James Brown's personal repertoire. From soul comes the wailing moaning blues, over to sweet Appalachian ditties, and then down to wild tunes from the dark folds of Eastern Europe. Forbidden Joe aren't your average salty old sea dogs, and they don't do weddings. They sing, harmonise, shape and deliver their music with vibrant energy. All this, from just a concertina, 'cello, and banjo. And voices. Alex Borwick... Even in the womb, Alex was being subjected to music. More specifically, the music of the film 'La Bamba'. After taking the fairly normal route of piano and trumpet lessons at school, at the age of 12 he picked up the trombone, and from there blossomed his passion for jazz. Over the next few years, Alex also tried his hand (s) at the drums, playing in rock bands, including alternative rock band Inverse Order, until studying jazz at the New Zealand School of Music. After an intense year of musical rendezvous in Wellington, Alex moved back to Auckland where he stumbled upon the Devonport folk club and discovered the tenor banjo. As a result of this unconventional concoction, Alex brings to the lineup his own heady flavours of jazz, funk, and rock. Frances Dickinson... Frances spent her childhood on the shores of the bitter coast of Northern England, up to her eyes in seaweed and dreaming of pirates and a career as a shark diver. At convent school she was exposed to fiddle and choir lessons, until she discovered an addiction to good ‘Craic’ in the backstreet pubs of Whitby. She has been proudly jammin’ away with dirty old men ever since. Frances redefines the boundaries of 'folk'. Her dirty, fiery tunes on concertina and her angsty yet silky vocal tones are making folk music the new black. Her original material is exquisite and, mixed in with her fetish for sea songs and wild tunes, provides strong reference points Also this month, Blackthroughout the band's musical ventures.
board concerts on Friday 13 June, and Sunday 29 June. See inside for details.
Emily June Giles... Emily's womb experiences were also noisy. Her mother took an alternative approach to nursery rhymes with the help of a 5string banjo. It is still unknown if Emily’s kicking was an enthusiastic response or just plain fury, but it proved she had rhythm. Emily learnt the recorder at school but moved on to the cello when recorder techniques became too hard in the second year. As a result, she did time with the usual classical suspects and for the last six years has been jamming with musicians on the Auckland acoustic music scene, performing in folk clubs and festivals around NZ. Influenced by traditional Irish and English music, gospel, Eastern European fusion groups and American roots music, her style is unlike anything that you’d expect from a 'cello - versatile, staunch and funky.

AGM The club AGM will be held on the 4th Sunday in August - more about that in the next two Balladeers, but meanwhile don’t forget to give some thought to volunteering to be on the Committee. It is not an onerous task, but some of our current members feel it is time for some ‘new blood’, and are planning to stand down to give others a chance. The committee meets once a month to review correspondence and finance, plan the year’s programme, and discuss applications or offers to perform. Feel free to contact or any of us on the committee – grab us at a club event, give us a call or email and we can tell you more about what is involved in the various roles. The AGM will be followed by the BLIND DATE concert.
Friday Club nights The first “experimental” return of Friday Club Nights was fabulous. We are very happy to continue the adventure. We had a great variety of 1st half floor spots and an inclusive and bubbling jam session to follow. We will follow a similar format in 2 halves on the second Friday of the month for the rest of the year. (The addition of the new tables purchased by the Committee, and tea-lights reminiscent of those waxy days, made for a pleasantly informal ambience, and I think I can safely say everyone enjoyed the chance to relax, forget the daily grind of the week past, and make music together. And as for Ruth’s cake, that was a splendid and very welcome addition to the evening. Ruth says it’s someone else’s turn to bake next time! Ed.)
Cafe culture Have you experienced the 2
buzz that is Thursday nights at Eva Dixon’s in Miramar, cnr Darlington and Camperdown Roads? There is live music hosted by Laura Collins from 7-9pm, and you can book for dinner on 388 8058. Good food, good company, great ambience - and Eva’s is just one of the many places where you can get a great deal by using your ‘Entertainment Book’. Acoustic Routes is again offering the Entertainment Book to members and friends (actually we’ll sell them to anyone who would like one…) How they work is: You buy a book for $55. This gives you an entertainment gold card and coupons to redeem for brilliant savings at many entertainment outlets – mainly cafes, restaurants and takeaways, but also movies, travel, healthcare. Typical savings in cafes and restaurants are 2 mains for the price of one, or 25% off total bill. The offers are valid from now till 1 June 2009 so you can recover your $55 very easily. Every book sold is an $11 fundraiser for Acoustic Routes. If you’d like one we will have them at all events until we sell out – or contact me by email if you can’t get to an event. Gerard Hudson

Help send a young musician on her way You may have seen Doom Kitten perform at the club recently, or perhaps you’ve heard the melodic tones of her harp in the Railway Station underpass; if you have, you’ll understand why we are keen to help her make the most of an upcoming opportunity to visit Ireland. Come along to Ruth and Gerard’s place for a shared lunch and some music. Make a paper donation towards Doom Kitten’s travel fund, and enjoy the ambience of her background music to your lunch. Bring instruments and voices for a shared music session to follow. Sunday 8th of June 12.30 onwards 56 Park Road, Belmont - phone 565 3432 Bring instruments, voices, a shared lunch, and a paper donation.
Blind Date concert coming up in August We’ll be holding the annual Blind Date concert again this year, after the AGM in August. If you would like to take part, please contact a Committee member to have your name put into the hat. Names will be drawn at the July concert.
More on keeping up attendances ing healthy in attendance. If there is to be a permanent change in the future, how about the Monthly concerts, too, being brought over to Friday nights. This would suit people, who want to go on later to other entertainment about the City, and also help the issue of Monday-it-is! I really believe that reverting all the Sunday acoustic routes' sessions, not just some, which could become totally confusing, back to Friday nights as it was years ago, would be the way to go, although I realise that we must not clash with the Bluegrass club’s Fridays of the month. How about a vote from subscribing members to be counted and decided for this year’s A.G.M. night in August. Philippa Boardman
House Concerts Recently, there were two great House Concerts at Ruth and Gerard’s. This is a gentle little reminder to those of you who could of attended and consequently filled some of the empty chairs. Your attendance would not only support these talented artists, but hopefully encourage them to return to Wellington in the future. Thank you Gerard and Ruth for opening your home as an enjoyable venue to help make acoustic music happen. Philippa Boardman

An invitation to play Hello fellow Acoustic Routes members I play the piano accordeon, and am looking for 2 or 3 other people (but no more than 3) who: a) are relatively advanced players of their relatively portable musical instruments (I'm afraid, at this stage, this has to exclude "voice" and "percussions"); b) have a good sense of rhythm and melody; c) can play by ear, and do not rely on music sheets; d) are, nevertheless, reasonably familiar with chords; e) in general prefer minor scales over major scales (i.e. overall musical taste); f) either actively play; or enjoy; or, at least, are interested in exploring "my kind of music" (!): This is a bit difficult for me to describe here. However, major influences include Turkish music (definitely not all types though); the music of the Andes (if you know of any solid pan-flute players in Wellington, please let me know!); tangos (Argentine as well as non-Argentine); Azerbaijani, Greek, Gypsy, Yiddish, and also, to an extent, Irish music. Depending on the responses I will (or will not) receive in the next 1-2 months, what I have in mind is to meet with the friends who are interested; see if there is genuine potential for fruitful collaboration here; and start planning for more structured sessions (which would begin after early July, as I will have to be overseas in most of June). At that stage, we might decide to get together on a more regular basis (perhaps using one of the rooms at the Wellington Arts Centre), and see where this will lead us. If this sounds like you, please drop me a line. Esref, email:

An evening of Kiwi Music and Drama Saturday 7th June 7pm. At The Dowse- Laings Rd Lower Hutt. Waged $10 unwaged $5 Bookings: (04) 5891529. Where from? Singer-song writers, composer playwrights and local musicians have discovered they share the same location – KoroKoro, and the same spirit Kiwi music creators and proud of it! With some more like-minded friends from ‘close by’, they are keen to share their music with you. What exactly? Major contributions from two well-established musical families, who just recently discovered they live within a km of each other. The first half will feature up and coming young singer/song writers Riley Harter and Acacia O’Connor performing their own songs, supported by original material from parents Charles Harter and Sean and Amanda O’Connor. Charles (with some more friends!) will also play some original fiddle tunes in styles ranging from jazz blues to “hard to define really”! The first act will culminate in the choral presentation of a song penned by Amanda: “The Spirit of our Land.” During the Interval, some good kiwi grub, Anzac biscuits and Lamingtons, will be on sale! And perhaps a “complimentary red” if advance bookings generate the market. In the Second Half, the families and friends join forces to present a new performance of ‘Warriors of the Rainbow’, a one-act musical by Charles Harter. The original production won the best new NZ play at the National Festival of Community Drama in 1986 - here the adjudicator described it as a “spectacular and moving performance”. Tracing the rise and fall of ANZUS from the 50s to the 80s, and the growth of our anti-nuclear policy culminating in the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior in 1985, it will be co-directed by the same directors that ‘workshopped’ the piece 22 years ago, Charles and Belinda Harter. The musical is a snapshot of the emotional roller coaster we experienced as a young country, and the consequences of making a stand for what we believed in. Its major themes of conservation and peace still resonate and relate as much today as when the events that inspired this show actually happened. If not more! Space is limited. Please book if you can.

Laura often plays in Mojo Mama, but this time plays in her original songs band. Her CD, Cast a Line, is described as Alt-Country backporch roots, New Zealand heart, with lots of soul on the side. "Cast a line is the CD from Wellington, New Zealand singer-songwriter Laura Collins. It shows off her warm, powerful vocals and original songs backed by a line-up of top musical talent. The album finds the artist moving between darkness and light, intimate and upbeat, casting lines, uncovering beauty in the debris and learning to love her own ‘bag of bones’. first introduced to the folk scene there as a teenager, arrived on NZ tarmac in 1996. Here, after well over a decade of suppressing her musical creativity, she finally discovered Wellington's acoustic music scene. This continues to give her the inspiration to shape the songs that have been brewing in recent years, and an opportunity to expose them to willing local audiences! ‘Helen’s songwriting and guitar playing are striking, individual and beautiful. Her material includes environmental themes, strong imagery and really innovative guitar playing.’ (President of Acoustic Routes)
