Management View:Omnipotent View of Management

26

The view that managers are directly responsible for an organization’s success of failure

Symbolic View of Management The view hat managers have only a limited effect on substantive organizational outcomes because of the large number of factors outside their control. In Warble (Pvt.) Ltd symbolic view of management is applicable because the success of the organization is depended on condition of weather and disaster

Planning A process that involves defining the organization’s goals, establishing an overall strategy for achieving those goals and developing a comprehensive set of plans to integrate and coordinate organizational work

Purpose of planning We can identity of least four reasons for planning Planning provides: Direction Reduce uncertainty Minimize wasteful activities and redundancy Set the standards or goals used in controlling Planning involves two important elements. 1. Goals 2 Plans

Goals Desired outcomes for individuals, groups or for entire organizations are called goals. Goals are the objectives and they provide the direction to all the management decisions. Goals are often called the foundation of planning. Approaches to establishing goals

27

Traditional Goal Setting An approach to setting goals tin which goal are set at the top level of the organization and then broken into sub goals for each level of the organization.

Means ends chain An integrated network of goals in which the accomplishment of goals at one level serves as the mean for achieving the goals or end, at the next level

Management by Objectives (MBO) A management system in which specific performance goals are jointly determined by employees and their managers is called management by objectives. Progress towards accomplishing these goals is periodically reviewed, and rewards are allocated on the basis of this progress. Four Elements of MBO 1. Goal specificity 2. Participative Decision Making 3. Explicit Time Period 4. Performance Feed Back

Problem One problem of MBO programs is that they may not be as effective in times of dynamic environmental changes. Because MBO program needs some stability for employees to work Warble (Pvt.) Ltd. Adopts “management by objectives” for goal setting. It means at each level of management, the manger consults to his subordinates.

Plans Documents that outline how the overall goals are going to achieved including resource allocations, schedules and other necessary actins to accomplish the goals.

Approaches to Planning

28

Traditional Approach It is much like the traditional approach in goals setting. In the traditional approach, planning was done entirely by top level managers who often assisted by a formal planning department. Under this approaches plans are developed by top level mangers flowed down through other organizational levels

Inclusive approach In this approach the plans are not decided at top level only, the plans are developed by organizational members at the various levels and in the various units of working. Inclusive approach to planning is adopted by Warble (Pvt.) Ltd. The mangers decide the plans for organization with the help of other employees. Warble (Pvt.) Ltd. sets specific but flexible and standing plans. It means all the plans are clearly define to the employees and usually plans are repeated more then one time. Sale and marketing department does short term planning while accounts department does long term planning as well as short term planning according to the managers

THE ENVIRONMENT External Environment Outside institution or forces that potentially affect an organization performance

Dynamic Environment If the components are an organization’s environment change frequently, we call it dynamic environment.

Stable Environment If the changes are minimal, we call it a stable environment.

29

The environment of Warble (Pvt.) Ltd. Is dynamic because of frequently change in weather and sudden natural disaster that may effect crops.

Degree of Complexity Degree of complexity can be measured as simple or complex. It refers to the number of components in on organization’s environment and the extent of the organization’s knowledge about those components. Warble (Pvt.) Ltd. has the complex environment because there are many components that can effect the organization. For example sudden changes in weather

Techniques for Assessing the Environment There are three techniques that help the managers to assess the environment are the followings: 1. Envireonmental scanning. 2 Forecasting 3. Benchmarking.

Environmental Scanning The screening of large amounts of information to anticipate and interpret changes in the environment

Competitor’s Intelligence It is the one of the fastest growing areas of environmental scanning. Environmental scanning activity that seeks to identity who competitors are, what they are doing, and how there actions will affect the organization

Forecasting Prediction of outcomes and advances is called forecasting. Forecasting is and important part of organizational planning. Forecasting Techniques: 1 Quantitative Forecasting 2 Qualitative Forecasting

30

Quantitative Forecasting It applies a set of mathematical rules to a series of past data to predict outcomes. These techniques are preferred when managers have sufficient data that can be used.

Qualitative Forecasting Forecasting that uses the judgment and opinions of knowledgeable individuals to predict outcomes. These techniques are used when the sufficient data is hard to obtain

Benchmarking The search for the best practices among competitors on non competitors that lead to their superior performance The basic concept behind benchmarking is that managers can improve performance by analyzing and then copying the methods of the leaders in various fields.

Motivation The processes that account for an individual’s willingness to exert high levels of effort to reach organizational goals, conditioned by the effort’s ability to satisfy some individual need is called motivation

Motivating techniques Compressed Workweek A workweek where employees work longer hours per day but fewer days per week

31

Flexible Work Hours A scheduling system in which employees are required to work a certain number of hours per week, but are free, within limits, to vary the hours of work.

Job Sharing The practice of having two or more people spilt a full time job.

Telecommuting A job approach where employees work at home and are linked to the and modem

Open Book Management A motivational approach in which an organization’s financial statements are shared with employees
