Welcome Note
We are pleased to present our Bachelor and Master of Science programmes taught entirely in English. In particular the Bachelor of Science in Architecture, the Bachelor of Science in Urban Planning, the Master of Science in Architecture and the Master of Science in Urban Planning and Policy Design are welcoming candidates of different backgrounds. The educational curricula are conceived for an international audience and are aimed at developing abilities and knowledge in dealing with a variety of projects. These programs are a significant step for the development of our established multidisciplinary school and we kindly ask you to circulate and forward this information to all those who may be interested.

Our History Facts and Figures
The Politecnico di Milano was established in 1863 by scholars and entrepreneurs. Over the years, it has been the home institution to most prominent professors, including: mathematician Francesco Brioschi, the first President of Politecnico di Milano; Luigi Cremona and Giulio Natta, both of whom were Nobel Prize winners of Chemistry in 1963. As testament to these numerous achievements in its history, the Politecnico di Milano is now one of the most reknown European universities in Engineering, Architecture and Industrial Design.

The educational policy of the Politecnico di Milano offers different curricula designed according to the highest academics standards. The Politecnico di Milano has approximately 40,000 students and more than 1200 professors as permanent staff in its seven campuses located in the Lombardy Region, which makes it the largest institution in Italy for Engineering, Architecture and Industrial Design The Politecnico di Milano is organized into seventeen departments of nine networked Schools: six of them relate to various branches of engineering and three to architecture, urban planning and industrial design. Each School at Politecnico di Milano offers a number of courses articulated into three main academic levels: “Laurea” – Bachelor of Science: The Bachelor of Science is an undergraduate degree obtained after a three-year course of study and aims to provide a solid foundation in the core scientific subjects as well as a more specialized, professional training. “Laurea Magistrale- Master of Science: The Master of Science is awarded after two years of study which aim to provide advanced training in highly specialized fields. During the second year, students are expected to attain work experience through an internship. When students obtain the B.Sc. degree, they have the option to continue their studies by applying with the Master of Science. “Dottorato di Ricerca” - Ph.D. Program: The PhD program requires a candidate to hold a Master of Science degree or equivalent. The PhD is awarded after three years of study and it aims at developing research competences in manufacturing firms, service companies, public bodies, and universities. The school of Architecture offers undergraduate and graduate programmes in Architecture and Urban Planning. The school’s international policy has been targeting the Master of Science programmes since 2006, and the Phd programmes since 2008. Also, starting from 2009 the Bachelor of Science programmes will be offered in English and opened to an international audience.

The Architecture Campuses
The Faculty of Architecture and Society is hosted both by the Leonardo Campus in Milan and by the Campus in Piacenza. The Leonardo Campus is the historical seat of Politecnico di Milano since 1927. Most academic activities take place inside this original core of the campus. The new Piacenza Campus represents the latest acquirement of the Politecnico di Milano.

Bachelor of Science in Architecture
Introduction In face of growing requests, Politecnico di Milano and its School of Architecture have undergone a process of renovation of their educational offers, with the goal of achieving a broad international outreach. Starting from the academic year 2009/2010 a new main concentration in Architecture, taught entirely in English, will be activated. The heart of the new Bachelor in Architecture lies in a challenging blend of Italian architecture with worldwide issues and their trends. Applications by Italian, EU, and non- EU citizens will be welcome as well. Profile The Programme will develop along six semesters (three years). Activities in each semester are centred upon a design-oriented studio, considered as a primary focus in the development of the educational curriculum. Several design tutors are in fact established professionals who effectively manage to bring together research, technical, practical knowledge. Additional core and elective courses also accompany the design studio, and are assessed through a combination of coursework, essays and examinations. Excursions, residential workshops, exchange programs and other educational activities provide the students with further opportunities to develop their profile according to their interests. The degree is granted once that 180 ECTS credits are gained along the three years of the programme.

Bachelor of Science in Urban Planning
Introduction Starting from the academic year 2009/2010 a new main concentration, entirely taught in English, will be opened to international and Italian students. The three-year, preprofessional degree is designed for all those who seek a solid background in the field of urban planning, for either working in planning related areas or continuing education in higher degree programmes. The programme is rooted in the long standing tradition of our school, as it proposes to focus on the close relationship between urban landscapes and urban development as a fundamentally social and economic phenomenon: policy analysis, sociology, economics and design are thus brought to bear on urban problems in Italy and in Europe. Students will learn about the skills and responsibilities in which planners need to consolidate in order to promote effective and viable solutions. The teaching staff is mainly drawn from the Department of Planning and Architecture, and it will gives students an opportunity to further tailor their own education around six alternate themes: Land Use Planning, Environmental Policy, Urban History, Policy Analysis and Urban Problems, Legal Issues and Social Change, International Development. Students will be also supported by expert tutors, selected among the teaching and research staff. Study trips, exchange programs and seminars may be also offered in order to enrich variety the educational experience.

Profile The programme develops along three years, (six semesters) and its overall activities correspond to 180 ECTS. Each semester is centered upon a studio activity, and a number of classes. Classes are divided in core subjects and elective courses: their topics range from representation techniques, history of architecture history of city development, to law, geography, regional economics and applied mathematics. Master of Science in Architecture
Overview Politecnico di Milano became home to many well-known architects of the 20th century: Renzo Piano, Franco Albini, Ludovico Belgiojoso, Piero Bottoni, Achille Castiglioni, Franca Helg, Tomas Maldonado, Piero Portaluppi, Paolo Portoghesi, Ernest Nathan Rogers, Aldo Rossi, Marco Zanuso. Today a number of renowned scholars and professionals in the field of architecture and planning are contributing to the School as full time professors. The Program The Master of Science programme deals with a broad range of issues and disciplinary fields: history of architecture, media and tools for representation, theoretical and methodological aspects related to to surveying and rendering the organization of space at different project scales (buildings cities, regions). Students are encouraged to dynamically develop a critical attitude, new skills in order to face the complexity of current architectural practice. The Architecture programme features two concentrations taught in English: Urban Restoration and Architectural Design, both of which develop an innovative approach to architecture. A typical study plan for the academic year of 2008-2009 is depicted in the table below. Beside curricular activities, the environment of the School provides a number of international seminars, conferences and study visits which are organized to support and enhance academic development. Master of Science in Urban Planning and Policy Design
Overview The Master of Science programme offered by the School of Architecture and Society is rooted in a polytechnic tradition, bridging urban design, regional studies and social sciences. The programme aims at developing a wide education in planning and policy making. The courses are given at the Campus Leonardo. The Programme Course activities of the Master of Science in Urban Planning and Policy Design are organized along four semesters. The first semester aims to set a common frame of reference for students coming from different disciplines through a range of various learning experiences. From the second semester onwards, the students face several options according to two concentrations: Urban Design and Urban Policies. Each orientation features two distinctive laboratories dedicated to the preparation of a project and qualified internships and work experience in public agencies or professional offices are also offered. The School has rich libraries, with the Architecture and Planning Department library being specialized in Urban Planning. Career opportunities The aim of the programme is to train professionals who can deal with the multiple and complex issues of the contemporary policy agenda for cities and regions. Students who graduated from our Master of Science programme usually work for local governments, research institutes, real estate companies and private advisors, in Italy and abroad. Eligible students The Master of Science is addressing candidates holding a Bachelor Degree in one of the many subjects related to the Program: urban planning, architecture, engineering, sociology and social sciences, geography, economy, political sciences, and environmental sciences.

Tuition Fees & Scholarships
Regular fees for the Masters of Science are based on family income and range from 794.00€ to 3,270.00€. For the Bachelors of Science they range from 831.00€ to 3,543.00€. Fees are waived for international students who qualify for a scholarship, except for the enrolment fee (144.00€). The Politecnico di Milano offers scholarships to qualified foreign students applying to Master of Science programmes. The scholarships cover accommodation costs with one of the Politecnico di Milano’s associate Student Dormitories. For additional information, please refer to the website http://www.polimi.it/english/ Alta Scuola Politecnica (ASP) is a joint-institution of Politecnico di Milano and Politecnico di Torino, offering multi-disciplinary and entrepreneurship education to a highly selected number of students enrolled in the two Universities. Accomodation and Other Facilities
Accommodation The Politecnico di Milano has special arrangements with several dormitories, located nearby its Campuses. Students who meet specified academic and financial requirements may apply for scholarships including accommodation. [email protected] Intensive Italian Courses For the foreign students studying at Politecnico di Milano, intensive Italian language courses are offered free of charge. The courses are offered in three levels: beginners, intermediate and advanced, from October to December and from March to June. Language courses are offered every semester and they take place 2 or 3 days in a week late in the afternoon. The application to the Courses is usually open in early October followed by an admission test the student’s knowledge level of the language. Support to international Students Foreign students can find support and help in administrative and logistic or organizational issues. A specific desk for international and exchange students in the “Segreteria Studenti”, gives all the necessary information about bureaucratic procedures and administrative offices to apply to. Application Process
All foreign students having a Bachelor Degree or equivalent degree may apply to the Masters’ Programs offered by Politecnico di Milano. The Application process consists of three consecutive steps. First Step: On-line application and submission of required documents that will be reviewed for the selection of the applicants. This process is generally open from October until March of each year. Second Step: If the application is positively evaluated, the candidate is asked to submit the required documents to the Italian Embassy in the applicant’s country, which will be the reference for obtaining an Italian Visa and to complete the enrollment to an Italian University. The deadline for this process is set annually by the Italian Ministry of Education and generally takes place between May and July. Since the deadlines and requested documents may vary according to the applicant’s country, it is recommended to contact the Italian Embassy (www.esteri.it/eng/2_11_6.asp/) Third Step: Entry to Italy. By the end of August the Italian Embassy issues an entrance visa for study purpose to all the admitted applicants.
