The President and the Queen

One of the most eagerly awaited moments on this trip to the European continent was the President and Michelle’s visit to Buckingham Palace to meet the Queen. The Obamas exchanged gifts with the Queen, giving her a signed Richard Rogers songbook and an iPod, and receiving from her a signed photo of themselves.

Guest Commentary How Did America Really Get into This AIG Mess? As the economy worsens, perhaps we need to ponder how we got into this mess.

Kevin Seraaj

Some – and almost all of them are on my side of the political spectrum – have tried to blame Gregory Kane the Community Reinvestment Act, a law Congress passed in the 1970s to encourage banks to lend money to potential homeowners in poor minority neighborhoods. The hope was that the CRA would encourage banks to stop “redlining,” the practice of banks not lending to black people to keep them out of certain neighborhoods.

Talk to an economist – the ones who know about this stuff of why and how recessions start – and they almost laugh at the idea of blaming the CRA. Apparently, it’s just another attempt by conservatives to scapegoat liberals in general and black folks in particular. There are several other theories floating around about why the economy tanked. My favorite suspect is the American International Group, better known lately as simply AIG. No point in rehashing for BlackAmericaWeb readers what AIG is; I’m sure they already know. There are exactly 170 billion reasons to know, as that’s the number of dollars in our tax money Congress doled out to keep AIG afloat. And there are 165 million more. That would be the amount in dollars of what $170 billion AIG tried to give executives in bonuses. Apparently, someone at Time magazine feels the same way I do about AIG being the number-one suspect as to who or what caused the economic downturn. When I went to my mailbox this week and pulled out the current issue of Time, I was greeted with the following headline on the cover: “The Bailout Bomb: Why AIG = WMD.” The sub-headline read, “Forget those bonuses. The real scandal is how AIG was allowed to become a financial weapon of mass destruction.” Inside the magazine, above reporter Bill Saporito’s byline, is the following summation: “Years of unregulated and risky deals exposed the insurance giant (AIG) to catastrophic losses. Now it’s paying bonuses to the same people who helped create the mess. With our money. A look at why a dark corner of the global economy is costing U.S. taxpayers $170 billion – and counting.” Saporito’s story is filled with a lot of economic jargon I won’t bother to repeat in this column. What I got from it – after repeated readings, I’ll admit – is that AIG lost billions of dollars by insuring a lot of high-risk, bad loans with money from something called “collateralized debt obligations.” AIG lost big money when the value of CDOs did what the economy has now done: Drop like a dead guy’s blood pressure. But there’s yet another suspect I’d like to add to the list. Saporito mentions that suspect in this passage from his story: “How was AIG able to live so dangerously for so long? In part because for years Washington looked the other way. The company befriended politicians with campaign cash - $9.3 million divided evenly between Democrats and Republicans from 1990 to 2008, the Center for Responsive Politics reported. And it spent more than $70 million to lobby them over the past decade, escaping the kind of regulation that might have prevented the current crisis.” Congress is my number-two suspect, the same Congress that has been bought and paid for by AIG and God knows who else. And that brings me to my third suspect on the list of culprits responsible for the mess we’re in: The American electorate. That’s right - US. We’re the ones who put those senators and representatives who served in Congress from 1990 to 2008 in their seats. And note that the CRP reported that AIG spent its money evenly between Democrats and Republicans. Both parties are to blame for this one. For at least the past two years, probably longer, I’ve had one main mantra when I’m asked to speak to various groups. When the subject turns to politics and our Congress, I tell people Democrats and Republicans have ruled the roost for far too long. “There are not as many members of the Green Party in Congress as there should be,” I tell listeners. “There are not as many members from the Libertarian Party in Congress as there should be. There aren’t as many from the Constitution Party or from any party whose name doesn’t start with a D or an R. If a significant number of people from those parties had been in Congress for the past five years, we wouldn’t be in this mess.” It remains to be seen if the American people have learned their lesson - especially black folks, who still love devotedly our precious Democrats. But if we must vote for a Democrat for Congress in 2010, we’d better be darned sure it’s one who didn’t take a campaign donation from AIG.

State News Florida’s Gangs - Not Just a West Side Story Gangs and the violence they bring to areas they inhabit have become a world-wide problem, with gangs in Europe and Latin America rivalling any of the well-known West Coast gangs in influence, reach and violence. At a Fort Lauderdale lunch meeting sponsored by Black Republican Clarence McKee, Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum and a panel including his top anti-gang strategist and South Florida’s top cops gave a sobering report on the impact of gangs on Florida’s quality of life, and detailed their strategies for combating gang activity. Attendees at the luncheon March 23 included Black media owners, judges, school board members, prosecutors, business leaders, elected officials and community organizers. Police are trying to change the perception of “street gangs,” which they say have become highly sophisticated criminal organizations. And it’s local gangs, not just national, well-known gangs such as

the California-based Crips, Bloods, and Latin Kings that are the problem. McCollum and members of his office’s Gang Reduction Strategy Executive Committee developed a statewide gang reduction strategy to address the significant threat of criminal gangs and gang violence in Florida. The ultimate goals are to stop the growth of gangs in Florida; reduce the number of gangs and gang members; and render the remaining gangs ineffectual. How will these goals be accomplished? According to the Fort Lauderdale panel, through preventing youth from joining gangs and intervening when they become gang members; through traditional law enforcement investigation, arrest, prosecution and imprisonment; and through rehabilitation during imprisonment and preparation for re-entry into communities once gang members complete their sentences. According to Emery Gainey, director of the Attorney General’s Victim Ser-

vices and Criminal Justice programs, gangs now infest every nook and cranny of Florida. Gainey is leading the attorney general’s antigang strategy. “We have a serious gang problem that many in Florida continue to deny,” said Gainey, a 25-year veteran of the Alachua County (Gainesville) Sheriff’s Department. “In the Florida state prison system, there is at least one gang representing each one of the 67 counties in Florida, even counties with only a few thousand people. And gang members share information better than we (in law enforcement) do.” McCollum said that gangs come from every racial group. About one third of the total number of gangs in Florida is White, onethird is Black and one-third is Hispanic. He said that the Florida state prison system is both a rite of passage for new gang members and a recruitment location for those who are not affiliated with a gang when they go to prison. “Many gang members

A major component of the gang containment strategy is prevention.. Warehousing gang members in prison is three times the cost of education and prevention strategies.. want to go to prison to show that they are tough. Others are forced into gang life in prison, and then go home and become part of a gang,” he said. McCollum now believes that state partnerships with organizations like the Boys and Girls Clubs, the Boy

Scouts, and the Girl Scouts are crucial parts of a prevention strategy that prevents young people from ever becoming involved with a gang. McCollum specifically pointed out former pro football star Jim Brown’s Amer-I-Can program, which concentrates on teaching

lifemanagement skills and multiplying individual successes, as something worthy of support and replication. The statewide anti-gang strategy will be implemented through seven regional task forces throughout the

Abducted Woman’s Call for Help to 911 Ignored by Police By Valerie Kalfrin, TAMPA - Jennifer Johnson had about a minute to talk before a 911 operator in Plant City lost a connection with her. “Ma’am, I’m in a trunk right now,” the 31-year-old Tampa mother yelled on a copy of the call released today. “They got me in the trunk. … I don’t know where I’m at.” Soon after the call disconnected, she was dead. Prosecutors released the call along with 700 pages of discovery material that outlines the kidnapping and first-degree murder case against Vincent George Brown Jr., Johnson’s onagain, off-again boyfriend and the father of her daughter, Je’Neiyce. The material also contains a report that Plant City police corroborated today showing they never sent an officer to try to find Johnson. This contradicts dispatch logs the department provided to News Channel 8 in December. At that time, the agency said the

logs showed an officer had been sent to search a fourmile stretch of Interstate 4 in Thonotosassa, where a cellphone tower had picked up Johnson’s call. Plant City police Capt. Darrell Wilson said today that an administrative review found that officer was working an unrelated security check in the area. “There was never an officer dispatched,” Wilson said. “That call log was for something different.” Police Chief Bill McDaniel’s office said he was unavailable for comment today. ‘I Guess We Shouldn’t Have Assumed’ A Plant City communications operator recorded a 911 call with Johnson at 5: 30 a.m. Nov. 15 that lasted about 1 minute 20 seconds. The conversation was so brief that Johnson did not provide a description of her car and could not say where she had been kidnapped, the documents say. The operator had trouble hearing Johnson over loud

music in the background. In addition, her cell phone number and wireless provider did not register when the call came in, making it difficult to map, Wilson and the discovery documents say. The operator told her immediate supervisor and a patrol supervisor about the call after it disconnected, but neither listened to the call nor took any action, a report in the discovery documents says. The log police provided in December showed an officer was dispatched at 5: 38 a.m. that day along the interstate. Today, Wilson said the department thought that officer had been sent to search for Johnson because of the agency’s policy to send an officer to the last-known location of a disconnected 911 call. “I guess we shouldn’t have assumed,” he said. Johnson’s phone did not have global-positioning system technology to help police pinpoint where she

Jennifer and Je’Neiyce Johnson in a family photo was. Her trunk did not have an internal release. Johnson’s family found her appeal for help heartwrenching. “It’s devastating for me to hear,” Rachel Johnson, Jennifer’s sister, said of the 911 call. “She was reaching out for help, but no one was there to help her. I think about it every day, and there’s nothing I can do.” Only Chance To Cry For Help Johnson’s aunt, Levery White, said even if the police were unable to find her, they should have tried. “They didn’t even send nobody. They didn’t care,” she said. Relatives reported Johnson missing the evening of

Nov. 15 after she did not show up for her daughter’s birthday party. Tampa police tracked her cell-phone activity through the phone company and on the morning of Nov. 18 discovered the 911 call had hit on a cell-phone tower at Interstate 4 and Thonotosassa Road. Tampa police think the 911 call was the only opportunity Johnson had to communicate with authorities. Johnson was found dead the evening of Nov. 18 in the garage of a vacant house in Lakeland, just south of Interstate 4 at the Kathleen Road exit. Her cell phone was tucked in her bra. Phone records indicate that from about 8:15 a.m.

Nov. 15 until the phone ran out of power, its signal pinged off a cell tower near the house where her body was found. She made no other calls. Brown, 39, is accused of killing Johnson on Nov. 15, Je’Neiyce’s 2nd birthday. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Tampa police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said detectives are investigating whether someone helped Brown. “There could be more arrests in the case,” she said today. TampaTribune reporter Ray Reyes and News Channel 8 reporters Krista Klaus and Samara Sodos contributed to this report.

Congress Takes on Tobacco - Again - And Again

WASHINGTON-- In 2000, the Supreme Court ruled that the United States Food and Drug Administration did not have the authority to regulate tobacco. Since that time, U.S. Representative Henry Waxman and U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy have been trying to pass legislation to give the FDA that authority. Advocates of tobacco regulation are hoping for victory this week when the House votes on a bill that would allow government regulation of tobacco products. Waxman’s bill, called the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, was debated Wednesday in the House of Representatives. The bill would not ban cigarettes and other tobacco products, but would allow control over the amounts of nicotine and other chemicals that will be allowed in cigarettes. It would also allow control over how the products are marketed, would publish April 3, 2009

the list of ingredients in the products, and would prohibit flavorings that critics argue are intended to appeal to children. Action by the Senate, is expected to come from a companion bill by Senator Edward Kennedy, and President Barack Obama’s signature are the only hurdles to be achieved before the bill could become law. President Obama has voiced his support for the regulation. Opponents from North Carolina and other tobaccogrowing states argued that the FDA had proven through numerous food safety failures that it’s not up to the job of regulating tobacco. They argue that instead of unrealistically trying to get smokers to quit or prevent them from starting, lawmakers should make other options available, like smokeless tobacco. That was one aim of an alternate tobacco bill offered by Rep. Steve Buyer, R-Ind.,

who would leave the FDA completely out of tobacco regulation. Buyer argues that giving the FDA authority over tobacco would essentially put the FDA stamp of approval on cigarettes, arguing that it might lead people to believe that certain cigarettes are safe. His bill would create a new governing body within the Department of Health and Human Services. Major public health groups, including the American Lung Association and the American Medical Association, wrote to lawmakers asking them to oppose Buyer’s bill, arguing that it would leave tobacco companies without meaningful regulation and able to make untested claims about the health effects of their products. Rep. Waxman (D-CA) was responsible for the 1994 hearings in which the nation’s big tobacco company leaders stated that cigarettes were not harmful. In other tobacco

First Peanuts - Now Pistachios Recalled due to Salmonella

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) are investigating Salmonella contamination in pistachio products sold by Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella Inc., Calif. FDA recommends that consumers avoid eating pistachio products until more information is available about the scope of affected products. Setton Pistachio has stopped all distribution of processed pistachios and has announced a voluntary recall involving approximately 1 million pounds of its products. Because the pistachios were used as ingredients in a variety of foods, this recall is likely to impact many products. In addition, the investigation at the company is ongoing and may lead to additional pistachio product recalls. The contamination involves multiple strains

of Salmonella, a type of bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Consumers have reported several illnesses that may be associated with the pistachios. It is not yet known whether any of the Salmonella strains found in the pistachio products are linked to an outbreak. FDA is conducting genetic testing of the samples to pursue all links. FDA first learned of the problem on March 24, 2009, when it was informed by Kraft Foods that its Back To Nature Trail Mix was found to be contaminated with Salmonella. Kraft had identified the source of the contamination to be pistachios from Setton and conducted a recall. Just as with the peanut paste and peanuts recall of

this past winter, the pistachio recall started out as potentially a single source of contamination, that spread exponentially to include almost every peanut containing product on the market. Publix Super Markets is issuing a voluntary recall on all 6 oz packages of Publix Pistachios with a UPC # of 41415-04033 because these products may contain pistachios from Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc. In addition to Publix, Whole Foods Markets and Kroger have issued voluntary recalls of certain items containing pistachios, and Frito-Lay, John Sanfilippo & Sons, and Kar Nut Products have all issued recalls of various items containing either pistachios, peanuts or both. For a complete listing of all recalled items visit the FDA searchable database at www.fda.gov/pistachios/.

We all have to work like that.” Lamberti described the interagency communication among law enforcement units in Sunrise, Lauderhill, Delray Beach, Tamarac and Palm Beach County that resulted in the capture and indictment of five gang members, all ages 18-22, who robbed South Floridaarea Dunkin’ Donut stores and killed two men in the process. “One was a self-proclaimed Blood (gang member) who shot a man in the back with a shotgun as he was sitting in the store. When the detective asked him why, he said, ‘I wanted to up my body count’ in the gang,” Lamberti sighed. “We had another case where a new gang member shot and randomly killed a man walking down the street, because it was part of a gang initiation.”

Lamberti said that approximately 80 gangs are in active operation in Broward, that his agency has identified some 227 new gang members in 2008, and that his department made 385 gang arrests, evenly distributed among males and females. “There are commonalities among gang members: no structured families, no role models, broken families. We can’t arrest ourselves out of this problem,” Lamberti explained. “We can deal with them on the back end. We are good at arresting people. Working on the front end (through gang prevention) is better and less expensive, but it’s not a law enforcement issue.” Ubieta of MiamiDade also spoke about his agency’s longstanding relationship with its Broward County counterparts. He also said multi-agency cooperation had become better as a consequence of

national security procedures put in place after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Miami-Dade cops are tracking approximately 90 active gangs of a total of about 200 or so in their database. He estimates there are 1,500 to 2,000 active gang members in Miami-Dade. “We’ve switched from suppression (arrest) to organized crime investigation, which take a long time,” he said. But the strategic change and the use of RICO (Racketeer Influenced Corrupt Organization) laws that took out Mafia leadership has led to longer prison terms for gang leaders and members, Ubieta asserted. Fort Lauderdale’s Chief Adderly said his department is focused on five active gangs in the city. He reaffirmedhis department’s commitment to work closely with other South Florida law enforcement agencies and community-based organizations. “There are leaders and

followers in gangs,” he said. “Prevention should focus on the followers to point them in the right direction.” Robert Perlman is CEO of BrandsMart, a large appliance retailer with stores in Florida and Georgia. BrandsMart’s estimated sales in 2007 were more than $1 billion. He was in the audience and told of the impact of gang activity on his business. “It’s unbelievable how well organized these gangs are,” he said. “These are not old-fashioned street gangs. We used to find our merchandise at pawn shops or being sold on the back of somebody’s truck. “Now eBay is the No. 1 pawn shop.” A concern voiced by members of the black community is how a gang is defined. Several point to instances where they say family members who have no ties whatsoever to gangs or gang activity are being charged with gang member-

ship because they hang out with friends - and the friends are not in gangs either. A young woman named Yolanda from the Fort Pierce area recently blogged in response to a story identifying her young brother as a gang member. “If there is a more than 2 kids standing around talking or hanging out, you say they are apart of a gang and that is not true!!!” “They use to have programs for the youth to get jobs and learn skills,” she continued, “now they have nothing but hand cuffs!!” Education, job training and jobs are what is needed to combat gang activity, say all involved in the process. Making these activities a priority by allocating funds to schools and after school activity will be key to its success.

Christian Women: How Can You Tell if He’s Thinking Long Term? by Nicolle Williams

A

s Christian women— or simply women for that matter—I think we can all relate to the curiosity that comes sometime between the second week and sixth month of dating a man we really like. It starts as a half-conscious curiosity, but soon becomes a constant questioning: Does he see our relationship as long-term love, or a fun, yet fleeting, fling? Signs he sees your relationship as long term Through my years of studying relationships, I have put together a list of indicators that the man you’re with is playing for keeps…as opposed to just playing around. And while you certainly need not notice all of these signs, you should see a majority…or at least the absence of their opposites. Finally, while you might start fantasizing about the future on date three, as a general rule, I wouldn’t even expect some of these signals to surface until you’ve been seeing one another for at least a couple of months, but probably more like six months to a year and a half. He uses the “we” word when speaking of the future Even if you haven’t gotten to the point of formally planning a future together, a man who’s looking long term will accidentally (or on purpose) speak of tomorrow as if you’ll be together. Comments like, “I could see us living in the city some day,” “When we’re older I’d like to live close to family,” or even, “Next Christmas let’s visit my aunt in Sacramento” are all positive signs. He says the “L” word And he says it freely, without pressure or prompting. He wants to share in spirituality If you are both Christians, it’s a good sign if he wants to pray and/or attend church together, two deep and emotional experi-

ences that feel family-like. If he’s not a Christian man, he should at least be interested in learning about your beliefs. Aside from just wanting to understand who you are, if he’s not a Christian, and he’s thinking long term, he’ll likely be trying to work out how your religious beliefs will fit together, especially if children are to be involved. He allows female friendships to fade This is an important and often-overlooked indicator (discussed in detail in “Regina Gets Real: Your man constantly chats with female friends—are you wrong in asking him to hang it up?” November 2008). The fact is in most happily married couples, neither partner retains close friendships with (straight) members of the opposite sex; it’s threatening, it erodes the intimacy of the couple, and it displays disrespect. After all, there’s no need to have second-string women waiting in the wings when you feel you’ve found the one for life. He integrates you into his group of male friends When he imagines you’ll be together long term, he wants to make sure you can coexist with his group of guys. Because it’s easy when dating a woman to keep her separate from friends; but when marriage is on his mind, he knows the two will have to mix and mingle…and he hopes it will be happily. He introduces you to family (and wants

you to like his mother) Same as with his friends, if he’s playing for keeps, he envisions years of holidays, visits, and gatherings. He wants to get his parent’s opinions of you, and see how well you handle them. Even though many people pick spouses who don’t get along with their families, the fact that he makes introductions and tries to facilitate familial feelings is what lets you know he sees your relationship as serious. If you are greeted by his clan with comments like, “So you’re Kendra; we’ve heard so much about you!” even better. He opens up emotionally A man who wants a future with you won’t just stick to safe and surface, dinnerdate-appropriate topics. He’ll be willing to take the risk of opening up about his beliefs, values, hopes, and dreams. He’ll do so because, while it’s scary, he knows he must assess similarity on the serious subjects if you are to build a life together. He doesn’t pressure for premature sex Of course he may want to. And he’ll likely even ask. But the truth is if a man feels you are future material, he doesn’t need the nooky immediately, because he knows it will come eventually. To the contrary, when a man sees you simply as “fun,” he feels he should actually be having some. He doesn’t want to date others While this may seem like a given if

>>> April 3, 2009

<<< you’ve been dating awhile, what’s important is whether he mentions monogamy…or whether he grudgingly gives in after two years, kicking and screaming all the way. Like quitting smoking and early-morning jogs, monogamy is one of those commitments that is rarely kept if agreed to under duress. He has a healthy sense of jealousy Of course it’s a fine line between healthy jealously and being improperly possessive, but a man who feels long-term love does not like the thought of someone else with “his” woman. So as long as it’s not out of hand, or he doesn’t discourage you from going after your own goals, a man who simply couldn’t care less if the handsome waiter is flirting with you is a man who might not actually, well, care less. He welcomes you into his life…and his home When a man feels there is a future, he will slowly involve you in his life: He’ll in-

vite you to family and work events, discuss with you his professional path, and try to involve you in his interests. He’ll also be comfortable with you chilling at his house. On the other hand, when a man doesn’t want to get serious, he’ll often try to keep you away from his turf for fear of getting too close or of you discovering that he’s still dating others. He’s happy to just hang Seeing each other only on formal-feeling dates and preplanned outings is, ironically, a popular method for keeping things casual. Therefore, if your guy moves into the more comfortable and intimate “hanging out” (especially at his house), he’s probably planning for a longer union. ests

Can We All Just Get Along? By Bishop Clifford L. & Co-Pastor Pamela J. Frazier

an we all just get along?” were the famous words spoken by Rodney King at his post confrontation press conference. For years afterwards, it was the catch phrase of choice for many people when dealing with relationship issues. What was interesting about the interview and the use of the phrase after the interview was that the question never received an answer. You would think that having asked that question somewhere in the background noise in the interview room you would have heard some Yes responses. However, every time we heard that question asked in public it was never followed by an answer. Why? We think it’s because people realize that the question is asking for something that takes a lot of work to provide. And the noisy silence after the question is our collective attempts to hide the truth that for many the answer is maybe not. It is the “maybe not” answer that is contributing to the alarming relationship statistics of our society and of the church. Over 50 percent of first time marriages end in divorce. The percentage of relationship failures increases to 60 percent in recent years; and the average time people spend with another is decreasing dramatically. And it would be dishonest for us not to also admit that Christian relationships are suffering almost the same percentages of failure. What is wrong? We would like to believe that most people do not get involved with the intent of making each other miserable? Wasn’t there something that they saw in each other that made them conclude that getting together was the right and obvious thing to do? Did they love each other or have feelings that maybe this could go somewhere? In most cases the answer is of course yes.

April 3, 2009

All the going out, social interaction and deep feelings of love that people have do not take into account the realities of the process of developing a sustainable relationship that could lead to a marriage commitment. If the date suffers tension, you can leave and go to your separate homes. If you are not feeling sociable, you can cancel the party, and if the love wanes before the wedding date, you can change your mind. On the other hand, you are compelled to face your discomforts when you get serious and contemplate marriage as in being engaged. It is with these realities in mind that we accept the privilege and challenge of speaking to the issues of relationships. We were eager to do so. We believe in the value of taking time to develop good relationships both because they become the foundation for a good marriage and because they are a good thing in an of themselves. We are convinced that God did not create the concept of having a meaningful relationship as a punishment for his people. We also believe that if your goal is a good marriage, it does not come naturally. Having a successful marriage is the result of learned behaviors and acquired skills. We love the Living Bible’s rendering of Proverbs 12:1a – “To learn you must be willing to be taught.” We’re sure that you’re interested so let’s get started. Because we conduct relationship retreats and seminars around the country and overseas, we get an opportunity to ask questions of a variety of people. What are the difficulties you’re facing ? The list is long: “They don’t treat me right.” He doesn’t talk to me.” I don’t love her; I just like hanging out.” I can’t stand _____ .” You could fill in the blanks. How do you tackle all these problems? We would like to suggest that the first step in fixing problems is not to take the problems one at a time, but rather to develop

sions—i.e. “I want to try that Indian restaurant you like”—is a sure sign he’s thinking long term. Along the same lines, readily attending events thrown by your family or friends is also telling. Bonus points if such events require a suit and tie. He mentions marriage in a positive light Men who are seeking short-term fun, steer clear of even the word marriage. And they certainly don’t play up other people’s pairings with statements like, “Rick’s getting married to Sharone; isn’t that great?!” In fact, if they do mention the “M” word, it’s generally in a negative light (i.e. “Rick’s walking the plank,” “throwing in the towel,” or “taking the plunge of death”).

Don’t waste your time or your life on a man that’s not into God. Because if he’s not into God, he won’t be into you! The final word The bottom line is that, while you can use these signs as a general guide, the true test is your own intuition. If you feel in your God-given gut he’s not in it for good, you are probably right.

a practical method for problem-solving. Dr. R.C. Sproul observes in his book The Intimate Marriage: A practical guild to building a great marriage. “Even the best marriages have problems. Often the difference between a healthy marriage and a defective one is not the number or severity of problems encountered but in the way problems are dealt with. Thus, the first problem we must examine is the problem of solving problems.” In other words, if lack of communication, waning love, financial disputes, to name a few, are the smoke of relationship conflict, then the lack of problem-solving strategies is the fire. One of the best gifts you can bless yourself with is conflict resolution skills. Indeed, having this ability is worth its weight in gold whether you’re married, single or divorced. Conflicts are born of differences of opinion and outlook. Which are not character flaws in and of themselves. There is no question that people are different. We see things from our personal perspectives. In fact, our positions and opinions are to us almost identical to the truth as we see it. That is not to say that our opinions are the truth, but we have a very hard time accepting the thought that we just might be wrong. When we meet someone we meet a person who certainly has different opinions and perspectives. But they too are convinced that they are right. Add to the mix that they are as willing to defend their position as you are to defend yours and you have problems. The stage is set for war or for compromise. The final straw in this situation is the fact that we see any challenge to our position as an attack against us as a person. Of course we are going to protect ourselves at all costs. When people want to get past these sticky issues they usually choose to fix the problems by ignoring them. It’s not that big of a deal, they say, or I am going to ignore my feelings because I want to keep peace. But peace is hardly what they’re keeping. They are literally harboring irritation which

develops into hurt feelings which changes into anger and then into rage. Their rage is like the built up steam in a pressure cooker left too long on the stove. The next step is the explosion. Good problem solving strategies can keep that pot from ever getting onto the stove. The absolute first step in this strategy is to adopt an objective overview. The foundational truth for relationships is that differences are not necessarily character flaws! Genesis chapter 1:27 states “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. KJV Genesis chapter 5: 2 contributes to our understanding by stating that not only did God create male and female, he also blessed them. Our point is that men and women are different and those differences are creative differences, and those differences received the blessing of the Lord in the beginning. Therefore, the blessed creatively different characters of men and women are not the problem. God made us this way. Try taking a different look at the issues with which you disagree first before you declare them a problem. You just may discover that you’re fussing about something God sent to be a blessing to you. Clearly, we don’t have the space to examine some specific examples this time, but we encourage you to write us and make some suggestions of problems you would like to have solved. In the meantime, we will keep giving you tips on how to develop ways to resolve the conflicts and to discover the hidden blessings in your building relationship. God Bless You The Advocate 11

xperts estimate that food allergies have tripled in the U.S. over the past 10 years. While up to 15 percent of Americans believe they have a food allergy, the real number is closer to 8 percent of children and 2 percent of adults with true allergic reactions to food. Food Allergies vs. Food Intolerance Typically, when someone eats a food to which they are allergic, their immune system reacts in a variety of ways. The greatest danger is anaphylactic shock, which can be life-threatening, but other reactions include rashes, itching and swelling, hives, wheezing or difficulty breathing. The most common food allergens include peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, eggs, wheat, soy products and milk, which can be especially difficult for parents of school-aged children. The list of foods that allergic kids must avoid can be lengthy, requiring some schools to adopt “forbidden foods” rules or establish allergy-free eating zones. Food allergies should not be confused with food intolerances. People with intolerances may experience digestive issues after eating a problem food, or even behavior changes, but their reactions aren’t related to their immune system. For example, an individual with lactose intolerance lacks enzymes needed to digest dairy, so they experience gas, bloating and stomach cramps after drinking milk.

Food Allergy Treatments Any violent reactions should be immediately addressed by a doctor. Keep a food diary with details of the reaction if you often experience rashes or asthma-like symptoms after meals. Your diary, along with a physical exam and lab tests, will help your doctor identify and treat any food allergies. Self-diagnosing is not a good idea, since unnecessarily eliminating foods can lead to malnutrition and unbalanced diets, especially in children. Food allergies cannot be cured, but

they can be managed effectively. The best course of action is to avoid the food-based allergens, but in the case of milder or unavoidable reactions, doctors can prescribe antihistamines to help manage symptoms or epinephrine to stop severe reactions. People who have family members with food allergies, or a past history of asthma or diseases that affect the immune system, are most prone to food allergies and should be tested early by a doctor. any of us know that a poor diet can wreck havoc on our bodies, but did you know that diet plays an even bigger role in cancer treatment? According to the National Cancer Institute, malnutrition is seen in as many as 40 percent of cancer-related deaths. “Sixty-five to 70 percent of advanced cancer patients suffer some degree of malnutrition.” says Dr. Pankaj Vashi, gastroenterologist and national clinical director of

gastroenterology/nutrition and metabolic support for Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA). “The consequences of poor nutrition are alarming: Malnourished patients have double the average length of stay in the hospital compared to well-nourished patients, and 45 percent of malnourished patients are hospitalized 20 percent longer.” How does malnutrition affect a patient’s chance of achieving remission? When the body doesn’t receive adequate nutrition, it struggles to tolerate chemotherapy, resulting in increased side effects. Weight loss is also a major issue in cancer patients, and even a 5 percent reduction in body weight can lead to health problems. “Unfortunately, only 30 percent of cancer patients learn about the role of nutrition in battling their disease,” says Carolyn Lammersfeld, national director of nutrition at CTCA. “Many hospitals only have one dietitian per 200 patients. Nearly two-thirds of the patients arriving to CTCA for cancer treatment are malnourished. At CTCA, the ratio is one nutritionist to every 20 patients.”

Even when patients are unable to eat, the metabolic support team still uses creative methods to boost nutrition throughout treatment. The nutritionists work closely with the center’s food service team to provide meals that keep patients’ immune systems strong for the duration of their cancer battle. Some of the cancer-fighting super foods served include: - Yogurt. Scientists have found that yogurt’s active bacteria cultures actually help boost the immune system. Yogurt also helps supply calcium, protein and butyric acid, which serve as tools to keep patients strong during their fight. - Cruciferous vegetables. Broccoli, brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage and cauliflower all have an active ingredient called “indoles,” which research suggests may be a helpful tool for fighting cancer. - Legumes. Including such foods as beans, peas and lentils, legumes contain fiber, folic acid, protein and cancer-fighting phytochemicals. For more information, call 1-800-5731255 or visit cancercenter.com.

Opinions/Commentary/Forum Commentary Race to the Top: Educating Our Way to a Better Economy

ecently, President Obama challenged all Americans to overcome the stale debates that have paralyzed progress on education so that we can offer every child, everywhere in this country, the chance to out-compete any worker, anywhere in the world. In the African American community, the need for real reform is an urgent matter. Right now the majority of African American children attend public schools while the drop out rate remains high compared to other groups across the country. Improving our schools is the most immediate way to extend opportunities to generations of African Americans. That is a central mission of the budget that President Obama is submitting to Congress. This budget makes a substantial down payment on our education agenda – an agenda aimed at preparing Americans from the cradle up through a career. That means raising the quality of early childhood programs; ending state caps on the number of allowable charter schools; rewarding good teachers, and removing bad ones; adding learning time to the school year; and putting the dream of a college degree within reach for anyone who wants one. It is an ambitious agenda and enacting it will require both resources and political will. We have the resources. But do we have the will? I was heartened by the reaction to the President’s speech. Union leaders vowed to have an open mind on issues like performance pay, higher standards, and charters, asking only that reform be done “with them, not to them.” Officials at every level of government are also broadly supportive. They are also asking the right questions: how can we ensure that taxpayer dollars make a meaningful and lasting difference in the classroom? How can we make sure these funds are spent effectively? The answer is simple: we are demanding absolute transparency for every tax dollar spent and we will use the power of the bully pulpit and the power of the purse to reward what is working and to reform what is not. At a minimum, the Recovery Act will

help keep teachers teaching and students learning in schools across America. But if all we do is perpetuate the status quo, we will miss this historic opportunity. That’s why states that are accepting funding from the Recovery Act must commit to making four reforms. They must: n Adopt internationally-benchmarked standards and assessments that better prepare students for college and a career. Today, some states intentionally lower standards, essentially lying to kids by telling them they are ready for college when they are not. A number of states are already raising standards. Every state should. n Build high-quality data systems that track a student’s academic career, making it possible to tell which teachers, programs, and schools are effective. Better data – on everything from quiz scores to dropout rates – can foster a shared understanding among educators and parents about what is necessary to improve a child’s education, creating, as President Obama said, “a culture of accountability.” n Recruit more high-quality educators to underperforming schools as well as to subjects like math and science, where there is a teacher shortage. If recruiting teachers and principals to the schools and subjects that need them most means offering them extra pay, we should provide it. n Support effective strategies to turn around underperforming schools. Closing failing schools and replacing staff is tough medicine, but the alternative is unacceptable. Kids have only one chance at an education – and we need to ensure that they are receiving the best education possible. To receive subsequent funding from the Recovery Act, states must develop a detailed plan to advance these reforms. States with the most comprehensive and cutting-edge reform plans can also win a share of a $5 billion “Race to the Top” fund – a portion of which will go directly to districts and non-profits that are achiev-

here is good and bad news on the school desegregation front. First, the good: There has been a dramatic increase in the enrollment of students of color, most of them Hispanic, in the nation’s suburban schools. Now, for the bad, even though the school districts are less segregated, the schools themselves are not. Students within the schools are not connecting and taking full advantage of the benefits a student body can bring. According to a recently released report, minority enrollment in suburban school districts has grown 28 percent in the last decade and a half. Hispanic students make up the majority of those students of colors enrolling in the often better financed and supported suburban schools. However, these same suburban schools, while experiencing record enrollments of black, Latino and Asian students, are growing more segregated. In 1954, the Supreme Court, in Brown vs. the Board of Education, ruled that separate educational facilities are unequal. Historically, schools with a mostly black and Latino student body, usually located in the inner city, lack needed student support services and offer a less than rigorous curriculum. Parents, frustrated, either moved to more affluent districts, sacrificing along the way, or sent their children to schools outside of their district, in search of a better education. The increased enrollment of minority students in suburban schools is a direct result of that search. Yet, despite the work of the courts and the actions of the parents, students are still segregated. This segregation within the schools could simply be an issue of students who are unfamiliar with each other not reach-

ing out to those who appear to be different than they are. After all, suburban schools were, for generations, predominantly white and more affluent. Rarely would you see more than a handful of non-white students walking the halls. Interaction and communication between the students could go a long way in desegregating the diversifying student body. This is where the school district comes in. Schools are supposed to prepare students for life outside the classroom. If a student can learn at an early age to interact with and, most importantly, understand, those from different racial, ethnic and economic backgrounds, they will not only succeed in the classroom but also later on, in the work place. Additionally, suburban schools have a stake in making sure minority students feel comfortable and not like an outsider; improving their learning experience and making sure their graduation rates are on par with their white peers. We still have work to do. Countless studies have proven that school segregation costs students. Even if the segregation occurs within a better performing school district, all students – minority and white – suffer. Suburban school districts implement diversity trainings, much like those seen in corporate America, which promotes acceptance and understanding among students. This is one-step in ensuring students who are from seemingly different worlds are able to study and work together and enhances the learning experience for all. Judge Greg Mathis is national vice president of Rainbow PUSH and a national board member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

ing results. In his speech, the President called on Americans to stop fighting with each other about education and start fighting for our kids. That means not only passing the President’s budget, but also doing all we can – as parents, teachers, principals, administrators, and national leaders – to help restore America’s global leadership

in education. That is how we will not only make America more competitive in the 21st century – but ensure that all our sons and daughters have a chance to fulfill their God-given potential and reach for the American dream. Arne Duncan is Secretary of the United States Department of Education

It pays to be famous. Within minutes of singer Natalie Cole’s appearance Tuesday night on CNN’s “Larry King Live,” during which she announced she needed a kidney transplant, dozens of fans called in, offering to be tested as potential donors. Most African-Americans on the transplant list have a different experience. The 59-year-old Grammy Award-winner said both her kidneys had failed after treatment for hepatitis C, which she contracted during the 1980s during her struggle with drug addiction. Four months after undergoing an aggressive chemotherapy treatment last year, Cole’s kidneys failed, and she said she faces regular dialysis for the rest of her life without a transplant. Currently, she undergoes dialysis for three hours a day, three days a week. None of Cole’s family members was a donor match for the singer. About 10 minutes into the interview, King handed Cole a stack of printed-out e-mails, telling her, “These are all emails from dozens, dozens of people offering to be tested to see if they can match, who want to give you a kidney.” “There are some great human beings out there; that’s all I can say,” Cole replied. Many African-Americans waiting for a transplant would love to have the same bully pulpit that Cole’s celebrity grants her. Still, she has to find a match, and fame and publicity cannot guarantee the perfect donor will appear instantly. “Hurry up and wait” is the way the process works for someone in need of a transplant, but who doesn’t have a family member or close friend who has offered to be tested and donate. Patients in need of organ donation go on a waiting list – and the wait can take years. Some patients don’t survive the wait.

“I’m on a very long list, which is why we are looking to donors,” Cole told King, noting that celebrity doesn’t move her up on the list. “They don’t do it like that. They do it according to what your needs are,” she said. “A lot of people that have kidney problems are diabetic; they’re overweight; they have obesity issues; they have very very high blood pressure, and they have different things going on with them.” According to the United Network for Organ Sharing, there are more than 100,000 people on the national organ transplant waiting list, and 34.8 percent of them black. At any given time, more than 3,300 people are awaiting a bone marrow transplant. But the picture is not totally bleak. “Donor rates have improved considerably,” as a result of efforts to educate the minority community about the need for organ donation, Dr. Clive O. Callender, founder of the National Minority Organ Tissue Transplant Education Program told BlackAmericaWeb.com in an earlier interview. Callender recently performed a kidney transplant

on Washington D.C. Council member and former Mayor Marion Barry, who received the organ from a family friend. The founder of Mottep told BlackAmericaWeb.com that when he began working in the area of organ transplants in 1978, there were eight AfricanAmerican donors per 1 million people. By 2006, there were 40 donors per million. Cole said her situation “is not a life or death situation,” unlike the teasers before the show aired which said the singer was “in a struggle for her life,” she said, adding there are people who are in worse shape than she is. Those interested in finding out how to possibly be a donor for Cole can find details at NatalieCole.com. Those interested generally in learning more about becoming a donor and getting on a donor registry can find details on the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Web site, and type “kidney transplant program” in the search field. “There are more people that need a transplant, “ she said, “than there are people to give, than there are donors, which is unfortunate.”

mentary meals at the hotel’s many restaurants, including the fine-dining steakhouse, A Land Remembered. To date, 350 teens who have graduated from high school have received full college or vocational school scholarships and 367 children have participated in the free preschool program. They are now in elementary school, in

middle school and a few are freshman in high school. Fiftyeight students are currently enrolled in the free preschool program. Prior to the program, the vast majority of high school students from Tangelo Park did not go on to college and the drop out rate was close to 60 percent. Today, the high school drop out rate is zero

percent and approximately 60 percent go on to college. Since 1993, Tangelo Park Elementary students’ reading, writing and math scores have steadily increased. And in 2004, 2006 and 2008, the school earned an “A” rating in Florida’s A+ plan and satisfied all the criteria required by the Federal No Child Life Behind Act. The Advocate 19

Dennis Williams

Orlando Man Killed in Late Night Home Invasion ORLANDO-- Dennis Williams was killed Tuesday night at the home he shared with his girlfriend when masked men forcibly entered the home and ’ mother reacts as any mother would after hearing word that her son was shot him dead. Police say they don’t know the actual motive for the crime, but are convinced the three suspects targeted Williams. “Based on what we know so far, we

do believe this home was specifically targeted, said Sgt. Allen Lee, Orange County Sheriff’s Office. “This was not a random act. They new what they were coming for and had a purpose for coming to this residence,” Williams, 25, was at home with his girlfriend when the three men barged into the house. She told police that the men came in around 11 pm, and began arguing with Williams. It is not clear what the argument was about, but after shooting Williams the men fled without harming anyone else. Williams was at the time under a two year probation for fleeing from a law enforcement officer. According to sources close to the family, he was working hard to successfully terminate that probation. Williams’ mother, Ramona King, was heartbroken over the news. She rushed to the home only to be confronted with harsh reality that her son’s home was in

fact a crime scene and rumors of his death were true. Accompanied by her sister, Susan, and her husband Ben Richards, King is seen crying in the photo below. Susan is barely visible as she and her husband attempt to comfort the grief-stricken King. “Just one thing I really want to say,” Ben Richards, said. “All you young people out there, please cut this out. You’re hurt-

ing a lot of people out here. Victims have families, too.” Authorities say they are looking for three black males with Jamaican accents. Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call 1-800-423-TIPS. Funeral services will be held at 11 o’clock on Thursday, April 9, at the Mt. Sinai 7th Day Adventist Church, located at 2600 Orange Center Blvd, in Orlando.

Here’s how to do a sudoku puzzle: Each puzzle is separated into 9 squares with 9 spaces in each square. Solve the puzzle by filling in the open spaces with “missing” numbers so that when you finish, each column and row contains every number from 1 to 9. (In column 1 for instance you see the numbers 1, 2, 7 & 9) Each number 1 to 9 can only appear one time in each column, and only 1 time in each row, AND only one time in each of the 9 squares. Have fun.

What Jobs Will the Stimulus Create? by John Rossheim, Monster Senior Contributing Writer

In his first address to Congress, President Barack Obama put his top priority for America’s beleaguered workers in simple terms: “Now is the time to jumpstart job creation.” The work of reversing the labor economy’s slide will not be so simple. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act seeks to bring timely relief to 11.6 million unemployed Americans and 734,000 discouraged workers -- so called by the Bureau of Labor Statistics because they have given up looking. The jobs created by the Recovery Act will make a world of difference in the lives of millions, even though it can’t put everyone back to work tomorrow. “The approximately 3.5 million jobs created or saved will reflect the current distribution of jobs across the economy,” touching all industries, says Heidi Shierholz, an economist at the Economic Policy Institute. Due to the severity of the recession, “that’s not going to fill in the employment gap entirely,” she says. About 3.6 million jobs have already been lost in the recession that began December 2007, according to a February 2009 BLS report, and no one expects the losses to stop anytime soon. Four strategic sectors will receive money targeted for job creation, either directly or indirectly: energy (459,000 jobs), infrastructure (377,000), education (250,000) and healthcare (244,000), according to a report by Obama administration officials. And the broader stimulus created by government work, recession relief and tax relief is projected to create even greater numbers of jobs across the economy. Alternative Energy Jobs Get a Jolt The stimulus package calls for unprecedented spending on clean energy, including $60 billion in loan guarantees for alternative energy projects such as wind turbines and coal gasification. The money is sorely needed, because the green sector has been especially hard-hit in the downturn. “Since November, hiring has been in a lockdown,” says Doug Scott, regional managing director for recruitment firm the Mergis Group. “It’s starting to improve, because companies who have the money to make a play are now doing so.” Engineers and tradespeople should see demand for

their services rise when federal funding reaches their prospective employers. “Electrical, electronic and mechanical engineers will transfer their skills the quickest to alternative energy, to work on solar panels and wind turbines, for example,” says Scott. “Technical salespeople will be needed, as will skilled tradespeople to work in installation, infrastructure and field service.” Construction and Infrastructure Win Major Support “Job growth from the stimulus will be heavier in industries that have been hit harder,” says Shierholz. “Those industries have the most opportunity for bounce-back.” Construction, with its free-falling housing sector, desperately needs that bounce. So hardhats and their coworkers should be somewhat reassured to see that Recovery Act infrastructure spending will be measured in the hundreds of billions of dollars, and socalled shovel-ready projects will receive funding as soon as this spring. For example, the infrastructure stimulus will include billions of dollars for public transit, encompassing projects ranging from railway repairs to the purchase of hybrid buses. Education Gets into the Rebuilding Act Recovery Act funding for education is projected to create or save hundreds of thousands of jobs, from teaching positions to bricklayers. This may give school officials across the country a breather as they struggle to balance budgets while state and local funding dwindles. Education spending will include a variety of initiatives, from billons of dollars in school repairs to additional millions for programs for students with learning disabilities. Healthcare Gets a Shot in the Arm The stimulus package includes many billions of dollars for healthcare, including $21 billion for healthcare information systems and technology. “The new administration will emphasize capturing information to better deliver pharmaceuticals and healthcare services,” says Jason Hersh, managing partner of Kline Hersh International. “Professionals in medical informatics

will be in demand over the coming years. Job seekers who are looking to transition skill sets into this environment should look into healthcare IT,” he says. Millions More Jobs to Be Added Across the Economy Beyond the four strategic sectors, some 2.3 million jobs are projected via other components of the stimulus package, such as extensions of unemployment benefits, aid to states and tax cuts. These jobs will be born in diverse industries, including retail, leisure and hospitality, manufacturing, professional and business services, government, financial, wholesale trade, transportation and warehousing, information technology and services, mining and utilities. Employment in these areas will likely come online sooner than jobs created in the strategic sectors. “Because it takes time to carry out new spending programs authorized by legislation, we expect the jobs created by spending on infrastructure, education, health and energy to be concentrated in 2010 and 2011” rather than this year, the administration report notes. Even given this jobs-building program of historic proportions, the rising tide of unemployment is unlikely to reverse itself in the near term. “If we can start adding net jobs in early 2010, we can say the stimulus did its job,” says Shierholz. Get Ready to Land a Stimulus Job Whether you are hoping to find a job in one of the four strategic sectors -- energy, education, infrastructure, healthcare -- or one that is indirectly created by the stimulus package, you can take action right now to be ready to stand out as the jobs are posted.
