An old commandment and a new commandment 1 John 2.7-8 1 John 2:7-8 MSG My dear friends, I'm not writing anything new here. This is the oldest commandment in the book, and you've known it from day one. It's always been implicit in the Message you've heard. (8) On the other hand, perhaps it is new, freshly minted as it is in both Christ and you--the darkness on its way out and the True Light already blazing! V 16 Lust of the flesh (generally food or bodily desires) Numbers 11:4-6 KJVR And the mixed multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat? (5) We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic: (6) But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes. Jude 1:16-19 MKJV These are murmurers, complainers, leading lives according to their lusts. And their mouth speaks proud things, admiring faces for the sake of gain. (17) But you, beloved, remember the words spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, (18) because they told you that at the last time there will be mockers according to their lusts, leading ungodly lives. (19) These are those setting themselves apart, animal-like ones, not having the Spirit. 1 Peter 4:2 MSG Then you'll be able to live out your days free to pursue what God wants instead of being tyrannized by what you want. Numbers 11:31-34 MSG A wind set in motion by GOD swept quails in from the sea. They piled up to a depth of about three feet in the camp and as far out as a day's walk in every direction. (32) All that day and night and into the next day the people were out gathering the quail--huge amounts of quail; even the slowest person among them gathered at least sixty bushels. They spread them out all over the camp for drying. (33) But while they were still chewing the quail and had hardly swallowed the first bites, GOD's anger blazed out against the people. He hit them with a terrible plague. (34) They ended up calling the place Kibroth Hattaavah (Graves-of-the-Craving). There they buried the people who craved meat. Lust of the eye (things, specifically beautiful things) Joshua 7:20-21 KJVR And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done: (21) When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it. Psalms 119:37 KJVR Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way. Psalms 119:37 MSG Divert my eyes from toys and trinkets, invigorate me on the pilgrim way.

Ecclesiastes 5:10-13 KJVR He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity. (11) When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: and what good is there to the owners thereof, saving the beholding of them with their eyes? (12) The sleep of a laboring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep. (13) There is a sore evil which I have seen under the sun, namely, riches kept for the owners thereof to their hurt. Pride of Life (Our Resume) Daniel 4:30 KJVR The king spoke, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honor of my majesty? Acts 12:21-22 KJVR And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them. (22) And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man. Mark 7:21-23 KJVR For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, (22) Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: (23) All these evil things come from within, and defile the man. Luke 12:16-19 KJVR And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: (17) And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? (18) And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. (19) And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. Proverbs 27:1-2 KJVR Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. (2) Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips. If we press ourselves toward him, we shall find that our vision narrows daily. We will less and less bothered by these things (above), we will continually press into a mold of His choosing, a mold formed out of love. In doing so, we will find that 1. The presence of spirits that work contrary to the functioning of the Holy Spirit make us easily angered. 2. We will find ourselves loving people beyond the spirits that control their lives. 3. We will begin to see things and Christ sees them. 4. We will begin to think as Christ thought. Matthew 6:22-23 MSG "Your eyes are windows into your body. If you open your eyes wide in wonder and belief, your body fills up with light. (23) If you live squinty-eyed in greed and distrust, your body is a dank cellar. If you pull the blinds on your windows, what a dark life you will have! 3

(2) He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. (3) He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbor, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbor. (4) In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoreth them that fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not. (5) He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.
