NIGHT VISION TRAINING SYSTEM An investment in safety

A PRODUCT OF AMST - SYSTEMTECHNIK GMBH

THE NEED

More and more air operators around the world are appreciating the importance of being able to operate their assets at night. A lot of pilots are using image intensifying when piloting performance aircraft and helicopters. The key to minimising the everpresent risks, and ensuring successful night operations, is a structured program of integrated night vision training for aircrew. Training in the human performance limitations of night operations in general, and night vision goggles in particular, is perhaps the greatest single investment in safety that an air operator can make.

Integrated Night Vision Training System

THE MISSION

TECHNIQUES FOR USING NIGHT VISION GOGGLES (NVG) CORRECTLY

- Effective scanning strategies for maximising night vision - Effects of different light levels on NVG performance - Techniques for tactical night flight & improved target acquisiton - Learning the problems of landing and flying close to built-up areas - Night flight in marginal weather conditions - Learning the effects of moon fractionalization and illumination levels on terrain recognition - Recognition of visual illusions at night (with and without NVGs) - Learning the limitations of NVGs, such as the almost instantaneous "shutting-off" of NVG with incompatible light

AMST has developed a comprehensive computer-based training system which is unique in the world for teaching all aspects of night vision. This includes the optimum set-up for each individual pilot's night vision goggles (NVGs) as well as practical exercises and demonstrations.

“Night flight by definition involves operating in an environment in which there is a lack of good quality outside visual cues for the aircrew to use as references during flight”.

AN INHERENTLY GREATER RISK OF VISUAL ILLUSIONS AND SPATIAL DISORIENTATION OCCURS DURING NIGHT OPERATIONS.

YOUR BENEFITS - saves flight-time and excludes inherent risks in early stages of training - protects aircraft and aircrew - prevents accidents - comprehensive, training syllabus - cost-effective and reliable - simple in operation - makes use of the NVG-compatible lighting characteristics of AMST's visual OTW, and instrument displays - full technical assistance, staff training, support and maintenance

applicable to aircrew of a range of aircraft types, from rotary-wing to fixed-wing, transport to fast jet. It can even be applied to civilian rescue helicopter operations.

TRAINING MODULES COMPUTER-BASED TRAINING COURSE Basic physiological and physical principles of night vision and electrooptical NVD's, advantages, limitations and differences of image intensifiers and de m onstrate s se t-up, func ti on and use of NV G unde r ope rati onal conditions. Also contains in-flight night VIDEO sequences.

SET-UP PROCEDURE TRAINING Aircrew practise the set-up procedures; pre-flight inspections; practise individual NVG fitting; focusing; ocular adjustment and calibration using their personal goggles.

SITUATIONAL AWARENESS DEMONSTRATIONS Aircrew experience the limited visual capabilities and visual illusions occurring under unaided and aided night vision conditions.

NIGHT FLIGHT Aircrew fly a short-duration tactical mission at low-level whilst wearing their night vision goggles. At the very least, this activity allows the student to operate an aircraft under NVG conditions with the benefit of recent instruction in NVG limitations.

REFRESHER TRAINING Aircrew refresh the theoretical knowledge at squadron level with subsequent visits to the Terrain Board, Night Flight with practical exercises, and theory revision.

STATISTICS & ANALYSIS Training results and bio-feedback data will be recorded for each individual trainee and are available for de-briefing as well as documentation purposes occurring under unaided and aided night vision conditions.

TERRAIN MODEL BOARD The terrain model board is used to develop visual scenarios and to practise what was learned in the previous training sessions, as well as to gain additional NV skills, including visual identification, terrain avoidance, wire hazards avoidance, interpretation of terrain, landmark shadowing and lighting effects. The terrain represented can be either of a generic nature, or can be accurately modelled on a specific location, or series of locations.

TERRAIN MODEL BOARD FEATURES - Mountain peaks - Water, and harbour feature with lighted ships - Sand dunes - Cultural lighting (town) - Airfield (with lights) - Rolling hill feature - Hidden valley feature - Variable moon position (in terms of intensity, angle and elevation) - Moveable flying aircraft - Simulated weather conditions i.g. rain, fog

All visual demonstrations are computer-controlled, using an easy to operate graphic user interface (GUI) to choose lighting combinations for various demonstrations and scenarios.
