RECAÑA, DEAN ALAN REVILLA

As an aspiring Atenean lawyer, I believe that the Rule of Law goes beyond the law being supreme above everyone. Its meaning goes further than everyone being beyond or excused from the law, and that no one should award segregation to the application of it. The Rule of Law, I believe, revolves around the values of respect, dignity, and integrity. Its nature of supremacy is built on its purpose of protecting and serving the people it embraces. It also values the courtesy of recognizing truth and justice amongst the people it encompasses. And most importantly, the Rule of Law is having the grit to stand in the face of false truths and wrong ideals no matter how society may romanticize them. The Rule of Law is keeping the flame that was once embodied by our very own Former Chief Justice Claudio Teehanke, known for being the flame and the light that did not fail. It is standing up for what is right and protecting its very own purpose of upholding truth and justice. Be that as it may, problems arise in the system at the least expected occasions. Realistically speaking, the government corrupts and the rule of law is obstructed. In such unfortunate events, however, who protects the Rule of Law when the system itself fails? Who keeps the light when all and everything darkens? Today in the Philippine setting, most people recognize the failure of the justice system and the abuse of the Rule of Law in our own government. Issues arise including the scandal of Former Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, and Former Chief Justice Sereno’s quo warranto issue. People are alarmed by the fact that even the judicial branch of the Philippine government can no longer be fully trusted. The institution that is supposed to keep the integrity of the judicial system has lost the confidence of many Filipinos. To top it all up, human dignity is being trampled upon by the infamous War on Drugs by our very own president. Even the Visayan term, “tokhang”, is now perceived as a negative stigma that represented multiple ill-mannered deaths caused by police injustice. This is the sad truth. The worse part of it is the capacity of most of or government officials to turn a blind eye on these relevant humanitarian issues. One factor that probably hinders them is their privilege. It is like riding a private vehicle all day on a rainy season without having to experience the Guadalupe rush hour. The privileged ones fails to recognize the truth because they are blinded Experience Integrity and Courtesy Importance Kailangan ba? Kapag nawala, ano mangyayari? Ano magagawa mo? Cite.
