Simplif~ing an Rlgebraic Expression Often, an algebraic expression can be simplified by combining like terms. Like terms have the same variable and exponent. For example, 5x and'3x are like terms; 3x2 and 2x2 are like terms. Num'bers standing alone, such as 3 and 6 are also like terms. To simplify an expression, add or subtract like terms.
