PRINTER INSTALLATION / CONFIGURATION Step 1:- Add the printer IP address in “/etc/hosts “file along with desired or given printer name.
Step 2:- Check the ping, telnet & traceroute status for the printer IP from the server on which we will go to configure the printer.
Step 3:- Add the printer using #smit spooler then select Add a Print Queue
Step 4:- As per the request select printer as Local, Network or Remote
Step 5:- After selecting the printer fill the details in fields Name of QUEUE to add, HOSTNAME of remote Server, Name of QUEUE on remote server etc and enter.
Step 6:- Printer is added now on server side
Step 7:- If you want to remove the printer then use #smit spooler then select Remove a Print Queue
PRINT QUEUE name Enter
Step 8:- Check the status of printers using #lpstat –p<printer_name> OR #lpstat –v<printer_name>
Step 9:- Check the print in queue or give the test print using #lp –d /test < printer_name> And again check the status
Step 10:- If the queue is down then Cancel the job #cancel <job_number> Disable the queue #disable <printer_name> Enable the queue #enable <printer_name> Please check the status after following each step listed under step:10 using #lpstat –p<printer_name> OR #lpstat –v<printer_name> Step 11:- For Troubleshooting Aspects please ensure the below things once you received the request from user i.e. the user is not able to take printouts from already configured printer on server side. 1) check the ping aacess #ping <printer_ip> 2) check the telnet #telnet <printer_ip> 3) verify the traceroute #traceroute <printer_ip> Note: Some times to resolve the problem we need to take help from Local Network Team & Firewall Team as well.
