INTRODUCTION  You'll find air compressors used in a wide range of situations—from corner gas stations to major manufacturing plants. And, more and more, air compressors are finding their way into home workshops, basements and garages. Models

sized to handle every job, from inflating pool toys to powering tools such as nail guns, sanders, drills, impact wrenches, staplers and spray guns are now available through local home centers, tool dealers and mail-order catalogs.

 An air compressor is a very useful machine and is not only used extensively in industry on land but on all types of ships as well. On a ship an air compressor is used to compress air and store it in tanks for various uses. These use these could

range from simple processes such as cleaning and drying of filters to tasks such as starting the auxiliary engines and the main engines of the ship.

 The officers who will work in the engine department will have to work with air compressors aboard a ship, so it is important for a marine engineer to know the concept, the functions and how does it work, so he o she will be prepared for any situation

CONCEPT  An air compressor is a device that converts power (using

an electric motor, diesel or gasoline engine, etc.) into potential energy stored in pressurized air (i.e., compressed air). By one of several methods, an air compressor forces more and more air into a storage tank, increasing the pressure. When tank pressure reaches its upper limit the air compressor shuts off. The compressed air, then, is held in the tank until called into use. The energy contained in the compressed air can be used for a variety of applications, utilizing the kinetic energy of the air as it is released and the tank depressurizes. When tank pressure reaches its lower limit, the air compressor turns on again and re-pressurizes the tank.

 It is driven by external source like as prime mover.  The compressor used for supplying large amount of air to

machine.

CONCEPT  Capacity of compressor

It is the quantity of free air actually delivered by compressor in m3 per minute

HOW DOES IT WORK? An air compressor reduce the volume of gas so as to raise its pressure and the compressed gas is stored in a solid container or tank usually having a pressure gauge and the safety mechanism.

HOW DOES IT WORK? An air compressor reduce the volume of gas so as to raise its pressure and the compressed gas is stored in a solid container or tank usually having a pressure gauge and the safety mechanism. Just notice that I have used the word gas which is obvious since the solids and liquids are incompressible. It consists of the familiar piston and cylinder arrangement, having inlet and outlet valves for the entry of normal air and the exit ofcompressed air respectively. The other component is present in the bigger engines such as the connecting rod and the crankshaft are also their in the reciprocating compressor. This arrangement is depicted clearly in the diagram shown alongside and you can see the various parts. The more the power required from the compressor, the greater the number of cylinders in it. Construction It consists of:

-

Cylinder and piston assembly

-

Assembly of crank shaft and connecting rod

-

Inlet and delivery valve etc.

-

Most compressors also have a tank which is there to store compressed air

AIR COMPRESSOR - What is it used for?

What is it used for? On merchant ships compressed air is used for a variety of uses some of which have been mentioned below:  For automation and control of main engines, auxiliary engines, etc.

An engine, is a machine designed to convert one form of energy into mechanical energy. The engine room of a motor vessel typically contains several engines for different purposes. Main engines are used to turn the ship's propeller and move the ship through the water. They typically burn diesel oil or heavy fuel oil, and may be able to switch between the two.  For starting of the main engines, auxiliary engines, emergency generators, emergency fire pumps, etc.

What is it used for?  For heaving the life boat up by the use of an air motor.

An Air Motor, is a type of motor which does mechanical work by expanding compressed air.  For pressurizing the hydrophores tanks for domestic fresh water and sanitary water used in accommodation.

Hydrophores Tanks maintain a stable water pressure in all the distribution systems avoiding frequent burst of speed of systems pumps. Are essential in maritime and offshore facilities for the potable or technical water supply or fire protection system

What is it used for?  For use in the sewage plant for conducting aerobic sewage breakdowns. Sewage is generally the waste produced from toilets, urinals and WC scuppers. The rules say that the sewage can be discharged into the sea water only after it is treated. The basic principle of the working of a biological treatment plant is decomposition of the raw sewage. This process is done by aerating the sewage chamber with fresh air

 For use in fog horns and ships whistles. A foghorn is a fog signal that uses sound to warn vehicles of navigational hazards, or boats of the presence of other vessels, in foggy conditions.

What is it used for?  For use in painting operations. Air Paint Sprayers

 For use in pneumatic tools (type of power tool, driven by compressed air, supplied by an air compressor) like pneumatic grinder, pneumatic chisels, pneumatic drills, pneumatic spanners, etc.

What is it used for?  For general cleaning.

 For soot blowing of the boilers.

Is a mass of impure carbon particles resulting from the incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons.  Used in pneumatic pumps for oil transfer.

 And used as general service air

CLASSIFICATION OF AIR COMPRESSORS  classified according to pressure

(low, medium, or high), 1. Low-pressure air compressors (LPACs), 2. Medium-pressure compressors,  High-pressure air compressors

(HPACs),
