A 48-year old woman comes to treatment for alcoholism and heard a lecture on sexual addiction. She reveals to her counselor that she has been married four times, each time, the marriage has ended because of her infidelity. In each marriage, she was always involved in at least one affair and, at times, several affairs. At the time of one of her weddings, she was having an affair with a member of the wedding party. She still does not know who fathered one of her children. She informs her counselor that she can no longer deny the truth about herself. She decided that romance is preferable to alcohol. Her story to her counselor revealed that she would have periods of abstinence from alcohol in which her sexual behavior would escalate. She would relapse with alcohol, because her sexual behavior was creating such chaos in her life. During treatment, she identified her father’s sexually abusive behavior toward her as part of the genesis, of her inability to establish boundaries with men. She was referred to an extended care facility with a special track for sex addicts who had experienced significant trauma.
A 35-year-old police officer is placed on leave, pending an investigation of accusations that he demanded of sex in return for not giving speeding tickets. He reveals to his psychiatrist that he also has a compulsive prostitution habit that costs approximately 1.500 dollars per week. He has been accepting bribes to support his habit. He has had several affairs over which his wife had left him 1 year earlier. His physician referred him to an inpatient facility specializing in sexual compulsive.
An anesthesiologist is suspended for viewing internet pornography on the hospital computer system; picture of adolescent girls. Being quite gifted technologically, he reveals in therapy that he is the Webmaster of a site that hosts pornography involving older and young women. He had been molested by a neighbor woman and had a pornography problem from the age of approximated 9 years of age. He would find his father’s pornography, and then he would be severely beaten for having it. He found escorts on the internet with whom he had sex and from whom the purchased amphetamines. A businessman in his late 30s was having sex with street prostitutes and had three arrests. He told his therapist that, out of the previous 365 days, he had been with a prostitute for 357 of those days. Many days it was two times a day and on occasion, three times a day. The idea of being with a woman he knew and cared for was beyond his imagination. Sex with someone he knew would be unbearable. In therapy he reported significant physical and sexual abuse.
A 71-year-old chief executive officer of a successful office products manufacturing company received two sexual harassment complaints in a matter of a few weeks. The company hired an outside investigator to do a company-wide sexual harassment audit. More than 70 women (past and current employees) came forward with stories of constant propositions., fondling,
and affairs. The investigation further uncovered similar stories among vendors, trade people, family friends, and an unfortunate incident with his daughter-in-law. By the time he was 18 years of age, a patient had been viewing internet pornography for 10 years. He was caught viewing underage pictures by a computer repairman and was reported when he was in the eighth grade. His parents made efforts to police his internet behavior. But he was more savvy than they were and could hide his tracks. He flunked out of his first year of college because he was spending an average of 40 hours per week masturbating, while online. His parents’ first warning came when his second semester tuition had gone unpaid. Their son had expended in strip bars all of the tuition money he had been given.
