Safety’s position can only be maintained through good leadership. Management commitment is not effective if it is simply expressed in words, it requires action that is consistent and sincere, demonstrating a genuine concern for the safety of the workforce. personal conduct Leadership conduct themselves in a way that reflects their concern for their own safety and for others. Poor conduct will clearly show safety’s low position in their value set.

visit the workplace …. show your interest and demonstrate your values, test and verifying work practices with the people who perform them. The workplace is the ideal place for workforce discussion; those who understand the safety problems and develop the most practical and effective solutions. AkerKvaerner - HSE VIETNAM
don’t pass by If you pass by without comment you condone - even encourage substandard behaviour or workplace conditions. Equally – if you pass good safety practices without comment they may not be repeated.

know your employees …learn of their experience, respect their knowledge and abilities, and understand their motivations. Developing and skilfully applying these qualities will achieve safer and more efficient performance in all areas of responsibility.

show enthusiasm It breeds enthusiasm. Disinterest in safety will be destructive to the overall safety effort. Interest will maintain the status quo. Enthusiasm will generate enthusiasm in others.
