SPARTAN EDUCATION o Ancient Greece was divided into several poleis; Sparta and Athens were the two most popular poleis. Consonant struggle between Sparta and Athens resulted in Peloponnesian War which lasted to 27 years. o Sparta was the largest poleis in Greece. It was purely military city-state that exercise totalitarianism. This meant that the subjects have no right at all; the state claimed the full authority over their lives. AIMS OF EDUCATION o To produce strong military/soldier-citizens. o In fact, the purpose of education was to produce a well-drilled, well-disciplined marching army. Spartans believed in a life of discipline, self-denial, and simplicity. They were very loyal to the state of Sparta. Every Spartan, male or female, was required to have a perfect body. o Discipline had been instilled to develop conformity, obedience courage, strength, and endurance to produce an ideal Spartan citizen was capable of enduring hunger, thirst, torture, and even death without flinching.

memorization, observation, indoctrination and harsh discipline. o Paramilitary for boys while domestic chores for girls o Societal Responsibility: Spartans have to stay with their family from 0-7 years old. o Barracks- From 8-30 years old; they take the oath of allegiance at 20 years old; required to marry and start a family outside the barracks at 30 years old. o At age 60, a Spartan soldier could retire and live in their home with their family.
TYPES OF EDUCATION
o Physical education was rigid to make the Spartan strong, especially in combat. o Military education was rigid. All the skills in combat known at the time were learned to the utmost. o Moral training was taken in connection with group living. Stealing was not a crime but if caught, the thief was severely punished. o Intellectual training was very little, just enough to understand the Laws of Lycurgus and some Homeric Writings. o Music education was to arouse patriotism. o Gymnastic education was for the girls to make them strong to bear children.
OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO EDUCATION o Development of patriotism, discipline o Inculcate the submission to state authorities and laws o Present military training in the curriculum was also influenced by the Spartans.
