ABSTRACT Gingivitis is the reaction of inflammation from gingiva which is caused by the accumulation of biofilm on plaque around the margin of gingiva and inflammation response towards bacteria. The nutritional status is affected by macronutrient intake that causes the abnormality of functionand the structure of oral soft tissue. Which causes the increase of plaque forming and in turn becomes the beginning of gingivitis. This was an analytic research using cross-sectional design, the sample collection is done by using total sampling as many as 77 people. This research was conducted to measure nutritional status by using IMT calculating formula and by examining oral cavity to see whether there is gingivitis to be found or not. The result showed that 46,8% is categorized as gingivitis and others have healthy gingiva. The nutritional status is based on IMT and it is found from the sample that (19,5%) is categorized as skinny (65%) as normal (9%) as overweight and (6,5%) as obesity. The bivariate analytical result using the Chisquare statistical test and showed the value of p = 0,000 (0,000<0,05) which states that there is a significant relation between the nutritional status and gingivitis of student in Study Pogram of Dentistry Sam Ratulangi University.
