SWIMMING POOL CONSTRUCTION A swimming pool is a water retaining structure used for purposes such as leisure and exercise. Pools can be sunk into the ground or built above it, as a freestanding construction or as part of a building or other structure such as a ship.

Competition pool

There are many different types of pool, including: Private pool The pools are 25 or 50m long, at least 1.35m deep, and at least 8-lanes wide. These pools are generally indoors to conform to heating and lighting requirements, and may have starting blocks, electronic timing, results screens, warm up and warm down areas and so on. Infinity pool

These might be constructed in a garden, inside a building or built into a basement. Sizes vary but average between 3.7m x 7.3m to 6.1m x 12.2m. Public pool Typically found in luxurious resorts or hotel settings, an infinity pool features water flowing over one or more edge, giving the visual impression of merging with the ocean or sky. A ‘weir’ is constructed slightly below the pool level where the pool edge terminates. Below the weir, collects water spilling over the weir before being pumped back into the pool.

Most public swimming pools are rectangular, 25-50 m in length. They can vary in size, shape, and depth, and can include artificial

CONSTRUCTION METHODS PHILIPPINE POOL SIZE Normally a residential swimming pool ranges 4m x 8m, 5m x 10m, 6m x 12m or 7m 14m, depending on what lot size you have. The shape varies from rectangular to irregular. POOL VOLUME CALCULATOR -

Filtration There are different filtration systems, such as:  Diatomaceous Earth (DE)

This uses mined fossilized exoskeletons of tiny diatoms to act as tiny sieves to remove debris. They are capable of filtering particles as small as 5 microns, although they are the most expensive option and require more maintenance.  Sand Water is pushed through a bed of filter sand and removed at the bottom through a set of lateral tubes. As the filter sand becomes plugged with debris from the pool, the pressure increases on the filter and the water flow drops, at which point the sand needs to be replaced.  Cartridge Water passes through a filter material which captures debris. These are economical as they don’t need to be replaced as often as sand.

METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION The main difference between pool types is the method of construction for the ‘basin’.

BUILDING CONCRETE POOL USING SHOTCRETE OR GUNITE: STEP 1: Mark out and excavate the area of the yard to install the concrete pool. The hole should be dug approximately 9 to 12 inches (23 to 31 cm) deeper than you want the depth of your pool, to allow room for surfacing the bottom of the basin. A lip is also left around the

perimeter of the hole to accommodate sufficient working room for placing forms.

concrete supplier for do-it-yourself use. Machines to apply the gunite can also be purchased or rented through these companies. Gunite is applied using a dry mix method, so no water is needed. STEP 2:

Install plumbing, using PVC pipe and strong bonding material. Your plumbing should include a drain at the bottom of the pool as well as the necessary structure to ensure safe water flow throughout the pool. Before moving to the next step, have the system hydrostatically pressure tested by a professional plumbing company to ensure there are no leaks.

Once the gunite is installed, it will need to be sprayed down with a hose every day for 5 days to assist the curing process. STEP 5: Choose a finish for the interior basin. The finish offers a smooth, decorative surface for the inside of your swimming pool and can be tile, marble or paint.

STEP 3: Install a steel frame into the outline of the swimming pool, which will provide stability for the concrete once the pool is filled. Cover the sides and bottom of the basin with steel rebar. The rebar serves as a frame for the concrete and ensures the pool will maintain its shape and strength for a long time. Place the steel in grid form for greatest durability. Each area has its own building codes in regards to how the rebar should be installed, so learn the rules for concrete pool construction in your specific community. Framing may also be added at this time to create stairs or other interior features.

STEP 6: Install coping around the lip of the pool. Coping is the border that creates the pool's decorative edge. Then choose a coordinating decking material that offers walking room around the swimming pool. Both the coping and decking are designed to complement the interior pool finish and may be concrete, marble, tile or stone. The installation process will vary based on the material used.

STEP 7: STEP 4: Spray gunite onto the steel rebar grid using a power sprayer, creating the actual pool basin. Gunite is either applied by professional pool installers or purchased through a gunite or

Fill the swimming pool with water, either from a source in your home or by having water shipped in. Your choice depends on the

cost of water in your area and the size of your swimming pool construction. After the pool is filled, it will be ready for use after the proper chemicals are applied and the water is tested for safety. You can learn about how to treat your water through your pool supply store or the professionals that handle your concrete pool construction.

SWIMMING POOL CONSTRUCTION PROCESS ALL-CONCRETE STEP 1: Excavation Excavate the pool area to the desired shape, making sure to leave a level lip for the setting of exterior forms.

After the exterior concrete forms are squared and leveled, steel should be placed in a grid following local codes. STEP 5: Interior Forming Once exterior forms, steel reinforcement, and plumbing are in place, the interior forms are set. Interior forms are suspended using the Swim-crete parapet bracket. Note: Minimal or no interior bracing required to suspend interior concrete forms.

STEP 2: Exterior Forming

STEP 6: Concrete Placement

The setting of the all-concrete pool starts with the exterior concrete forms. All the exterior forms are set starting at the step (when applicable).

Once all forms, steel reinforcement, and plumbing are in place, the Swim-crete system is ready for concrete placement. 3" (8 cm) slump recommended for all-concrete monolithic pool pours.

STEP 3: Squaring & Leveling Each pool can be squared using the Swim-crete pool prints. The pool then should be leveled using a laser or transit. The highest point of the pool is established. Start at the opposite end of the pool, use shims to level toward the high point until the pool is level. STEP 4: Steel Placement

STEP 7: Concrete Placement Concrete is placed into the concrete forms at a 3" slump starting in the deep end walls. Once deep end walls are filled with concrete, the walls are vibrated; this allows concrete to flow under interior forms.

STEP 8: Placement

Concrete

Next placement continues in the deep end of the pool, stacking concrete until both wall and floor come together. STEP 9: Finishing Concrete Finishing of concrete floors begins while the placement of walls continues. STEP Finishing Concrete

10:

Once concrete is cured to minimal strength, remove the forms, break the tie ends, leaving the pool ready to be plastered, tiled, epoxy painted or utilizing other finishing methods.

a concrete deck structure is constructed around the perimeter.

Vinyl-lined pools A hole is excavated, and a metal, plastic or timber frame wall assembled around the perimeter. Sand filler laid at the bottom of the hole, and a vinyl-lining secured to the perimeter wall. These tend to be cheaper than other inground designs but are less durable, as the liner requires replacement typically every ten years.

Gunite pools Once a hole has been excavated and the plumbing is in place, a framework grid of rebar is laid. This is sprayed with a heavy coating a gunite, a mixture of cement and sand. This is trowelled smooth and left to cure. The pool may be finished with plaster, concrete paint, tile, exposed aggregate (placing concrete before removing the outer ‘skin’ of cement paste to reveal decorative coarse aggregate), or fibreglass.

Above-ground pools These tend to be the cheapest and easiest to construct and are usually assembled from prefabricated kits. However, there can be safety concerns, as it can be difficult to see into the pool from the surroundings.

Fibreglass pools Fibreglass-reinforced plastic can be moulded into a basin shape to the required specifications. A hole is excavated, the necessary plumbing laid, and the pool is lowered into the hole, with sand filler used to fit the exact shape. The area around the pool is backfilled and usually

Concrete pools These are similar to gunite pools, but rather than spraying gunite, concrete is poured into conventional timber formwork. An alternative method is for walls to be constructed using concrete blocks. These have become less common as gunite techniques have developed. Other items that may be included in swimming pool construction include: 

Recessed rest ledges.

Overflow channels.

Starting platform upstands.

printed tiles can be used for lane or depth markers.

Stainless steel Tiles Where tiles are installed in swimming pools onto renders and screeds the levelling mortars s hould be cured and then allowed to air dry. Tiles should have a low water absorption of 3% or less, and adequate slip resistance for the use location. It is important that the adhesive and grout used for the bedding and grouting of tiles can resist the effects of the pool water and chemicals, or long-term durability may be compromised. The type of adhesive and grout to be used is dependent on several factors, such as: 

The type of tiling.

The mains water quality.

The chemicals used for pool water treatment and maintenance.

The pool design and location of tiling.

There are two main types of sealant used in pools as a means of sealing leaks: 

Epoxy-based sealants.

Unplasticised polysulphide sealants.

Stainless steel provides a wide ranging and vital service to industry, the leisure market and other sectors, stemming from its very specific properties. The characteristics most commonly relied upon are its resistance to corrosion and its appearance. However, it also exhibits other benefits such as low susceptibility to bacteriological retention and improved fire resistance and ductility compared to carbon steels. Notwithstanding these attributes, care is required when selecting the specific grade of stainless steel as, in swimming pool environments, stress corrosion can result. This is clearly of vital importance if the use is for structural purposes or if failure might cause harm or damage. This latter category might encompass items not ordinarily thought of as ‘structural’, e.g. advertising sign support brackets. Swimming pool building environments can create very aggressive situations stemming from high temperatures, the number of users and the chemical disinfectants used. Stress corrosion cracking may occur under a specific combination of the three following conditions: 

High applied stress levels in the component (arising from applied load or from residual stresses from welding or forming the component).

Susceptible grades of steel.

Specific aggressive environment.

Lines Demarcation lines, pool guidelines and warning lines can be incorporated in the design of the tile layout with contrasting colours. Common colours include white, black, turquoise and blue. For safety reasons, dark tiles should not be used for the pool base they make it difficult to perceive the depth of the water. Special screen-

Stress corrosion cracking relates only to components in the pool atmosphere and not those fully immersed in the pool water.
