Date___________________________ NOTES Section 2.2 – Linear Equations Definition: A linear Equation is an equation whose graph is a line. A linear equation has no operations other than addition, subtraction, and multiplication of a variable by a constant. The variables may not be multiplied together or appear in the denominator. A linear equation does not contain variables with exponents other than 1. EX 1. Identify whether each equation is linear. Explain a.) y = 10 -5x _______________________________________________________________ b.) y = x4 – 5 _______________________________________________________________ c.) y = 2ab _________________________________________________________________ d.) y =

Linear Equations can be written in several forms • • •

Standard Form Slope Intercept Form Point Slope Form

Ax + By = C y = mx + b y – y1 = m ( x – x1)

EX 2. Write each equation in Standard Form. Identify A, B and C. a.) y = -2x + 3 ____________________________________________________________ b.)

−3 x = 3 y + 2 __________________________________________________________ 5

c.) y = -5 _________________________________________________________________ d.) x = y + 3 ______________________________________________________________

EX 3. Find the x and y intercepts and graph. (To find x-int, let y be 0, to find y-int, let x be 0) a.) 3x – 4y + 12 = 0

b.) -2x + y -4 = 0
