HW Cub Scout Pack 1292 INTRODUCTION My name is Dave Enerson and I am the Cub Master/Pack Leader. Our Pack has seen rapid growth over the last few years, going from 9 boys a few years ago to 29 last year. As a result, our Pack leadership is expanding this year to be more like a traditional Pack.

Email – Home [email protected]; Work [email protected] CUB SCOUT BACKGROUND The Cub Scouts are part of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Nationally, there are about 1.7 million Cub Scouts, 500,000 leaders, & 50,000 Packs. The Huntington Woods Men’s Club is the chartering organization for both Cub Scout Pack 1292 and Boy Scout Troup 1292. All BSA Packs and Troops must have chartering organizations in order to be established. The Men’s Club has graciously played that role for many years and has also generously supported equipment purchases and special activities. Packs are made up of 4 distinct "ranks" – Tiger Cubs (1st grade), Wolf Cub Scouts (2nd grade), Bear Cub Scouts (3rd grade), and Webelos (4th & 5th grades). Each rank has a Den leader to work with the boys.

HW Cub Scout Pack 1292 PACK & DEN MEETINGS In more traditional Packs, the whole Pack meets once a month and the Dens meet separately each week, usually in a Scout's home. We're taking a slightly different path. All of the Dens will meet on the same night & time (Tuesdays at 6:30pm). At the beginning of each meeting, we'll meet in the Burton Gym for announcements, pledge, discussion, etc. Then the boys will break into their Dens to do activities specific to their rank. Depending on the activity, the Dens will move to either the Multi-Purpose Room or the Art Room (#119) or remain in the Gym. For a few activities, we will remain together as a Pack in the Gym. Den activities will generally follow a common Pack theme for that night. You'll find a listing of the planned themes & activities attached. Because the Tiger Cubs are new to the Pack, we need a parent (or parents) to volunteer to lead the rank. Most of the activities have already been planned and developed. Let me know if you are interested. FIELD TRIPS We generally have 1 field trip planned per month. Some field trips are strictly for fun and some are more educational. A few of the field trips have been scheduled and others will be scheduled during the year. The attached schedule shows any field trips that are currently planned. An updated schedule will be distributed when more get finalized. Unless otherwise noted, the Pack will cover any field trip costs for the Scouts, but not for parents or siblings. Permission slips are required if a parent is not attending with their child (Tiger Cubs must have a parent/guardian present). CAMPING We already have a camping trip scheduled to BSA's D-Bar-A facility for the weekend of October 9th. A flyer with more details is attached. We'll likely have another camping trip in the spring. FUNDRAISING We don't participate in the traditional BSA fundraising activities (i.e. popcorn sales). Instead, we do a holiday wreath sale with the local Boy Scout Troop and share the profits with them. We’ll be doing the wreath sale again this year. A minimal amount of effort is required from each Scout, but we need everyone to help out in some way. Flyers need to be hand delivered to every household in Huntington Woods (just dropped off, not doorto-door sales). We are also looking at signing up orders on four Sunday mornings at the Huntington Woods Lutheran Church. Finally, we will deliver the wreaths to customers on two Saturday mornings. Details will be sent out later but the delivery dates are scheduled for Saturday, November 28th and Saturday, December 5th. PINE WOOD DERBY / BLUE & GOLD CEREMONY For many boys, the Pine Wood Derby is the high point of the year. Essentially, the boys build and then race their own wooden "gravity-powered" cars. The Pack provides the basic car kit but some Scouts buy accessories from hobby shops to “customize their rides”. It’s always a difficult balance between how much work the kids do vs. how much the parents “help”. For parents that feel the need to help too much, it’s recommended that you build your own car and race it. We will use a couple of the later Pack meetings to prepare for the Derby. The Derby itself is scheduled outside the regular Pack meetings so that other family members can attend. In the past, our Pack has had a Pizza lunch after the Pine Wood Derby instead of a separate Blue & Gold Ceremony. The Blue & Gold Ceremony is a Cub Scout tradition to celebrate Scouting. This year’s Pine Wood Derby / Blue & Gold Lunch is scheduled for Saturday, February 6th.

HW Cub Scout Pack 1292 FEES & APPLICATIONS The Pack “treasury” remains healthy thanks to our fundraising efforts and donations from the HW Men's Club. This year’s fees amount to $65 for each Scout consisting of:
$15 for Council and National dues
$50 to cover the Pack (also includes a Pack T-shirt for new Scouts)
You can also pay an additional $12 for a subscription to Boys Life Magazine All NEW Cub Scouts must complete and return the Youth Application. Tiger Cubs (1st graders) also need an adult partner to participate with them. Be sure to mark the box on the form for Tiger Cub parents. If your family needs assistance with the cost of Cub Scouting, contact Dave and the Pack will cover the additional costs. All information will be kept strictly confidential. UNIFORMS Our Pack has been pretty low key about uniforms and does not hold inspections (uniforms can be more important to other Packs). The official Cub Scout uniform (often referred to as “Class A”) consists of a blue shirt, pants, belt, socks, hat, neckerchief, & slide. At a minimum, your child should have the blue shirt with all the appropriate patches, neckerchief, & slide. We recommend the short sleeve shirt because the kids can always wear a long sleeve shirt underneath for warmth. Most boys enjoy wearing their uniform and some wear it to school on Pack meeting days. For patches, each uniform should have:

HW Pack 1292 Patch – See Dave for these Webelos can wear either the blue Cub Scout shirt or the tan Boy Scout shirt. If your son has outgrown their blue shirt, replace it with a tan one to save money when they move to Boy Scouts. As an alternative to sewing on the patches, adhesive sheets are available and work quite well. The next page shows the proper placement of patches. PACK T-SHIRTS Each new Scout will also be provided with a Pack T-shirt to be worn on Field Trips and for other community service events. If you have a returning Scout who has outgrown their shirt, see Dave for a new shirt. CUB SCOUT MANUALS & ACHIEVEMENTS Each family will need the appropriate Activity Book for their Scouts. There are unique books for Tigers, Wolves, Bears, & Webelos. We won’t cover all of the activities during the meetings. Parents should help their child at home to meet the advancement requirements in the Activity Books. Be sure to bring your books with to the meetings. WHERE TO GET SCOUT STUFF
