I bought it, and as soon as I got home, I collected all my wrapping supplies and put them in the garment bag. It now hangs in the back of the hall closet until needed. The pockets are wonderful for storing tape, scissors, tags, etc. The rolls of paper all fit inside easily even with different sizes. It is easy to check for dwindling supplies and my hubby no longer has to ask me where the wrapping paper and tape are when he wants to wrap a gift for me. DD

We all have leftovers from years gone by, but we can’t remember whom we sent them to. We got together for coffee and swapped leftover cards. One of the group is very computer savvy, and she had us bring our address books so she could print labels for us. It’s wonderful, and we expect to do this for as many years as we can.

OUTDOOR CORNER Snakes And Meditation Growing up in the East Texas “Big Thicket” presented many dangers, copperheads for instance flourished. One spring we hung twenty-four of them from our barbed-wire fence. The “Big Thicket” has many dirt roads such as the one I lived on. I often walked those roads enjoying the outdoors. Our church encouraged us to memorize scripture, so I began with Psalm 139. I would walk up and down the road with the Psalm stuck in my pocket practicing and memorizing. One afternoon I walked with my two children, ages two and three, while I silently meditated on the Psalm. As a normal part of living in Texas I always had to keep an eye out for the snakes. I would look a few feet ahead to where my children would be walking, scouting out possible dangers. Then suddenly the Lord used that moment to teach me about Himself. As a parent I would look out and protect my children from the dangers that are ahead of them. So does He. At that moment His Word became so alive to me. NEW YORK FARMERS DONATE MORE THAN 3.5 MILLION POUNDS OF FOOD TO FOOD BANK ASSOCIATION OF NEW YORK STATE Albany, N.Y.- When New York Farm Bureau members traveled to Albany today for the State Annual Meeting they didn’t come empty-handed. Members and supporting food companies kicked off the State Annual Meeting with food donations to the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York. Today’s donations bring the year long total of food donated by farmers across the state to more than 3.5 million pounds. With a few weeks left in the year, it is expected that farmer donations will exceed last year’s record of 3.7 million pounds. Food is collected through the “Harvest For All” donation program. “Harvest For All” is a nationwide annual farm donation partnership linking the Farm Bureau and Feeding America (formerly America’s Second Harvest) in each state. In New York, the NYFB’s Young Farmers & Ranchers and the Food Bank Association of New York State administered the statewide donation partnership. USDA ANNOUNCES AMENDED FARM BILL PROVISIONS AND NEW SIGN UP DEADLINE (Coudersport, PA) Dec. 08, 2008- (CED David Stratton) Executive Director of USDA’s Farm Service Agency in (Potter/ McKean/Cameron) announced changes and clarifications to the 2008 Farm Bill. “President Bush recently signed into law a bill that made amendments to the 2008 Farm Bill,” said (CED Stratton). “These amendments apply to the new Supplemental Revenue Assistance (SURE) Program. These changes and clarifications create new sign-up opportunities with new deadlines for some farms.” Supplemental Revenue Assistance Program (SURE) Changes Under SURE in the 2008 Farm Bill, producers seeking disaster benefits must generally have obtained crop insurance or coverage under the Non-insured crop disaster Assistance Program (NAP) for all crops on all farms. Under the new law (P.L. 110-398), producers with crops that had 2009 crop insurance sales closing dates before Aug. 14, 2008, may pay a fee through Jan. 12, 2009, to participate in SURE. Producers may make their SURE participation fee payments to their local FSA office at this time. The SURE program fee is equal to the fee for catastrophic coverage. Payment of the SURE program fee will not make the producer eligible for insurance coverage. Producers also have a new minimum loss threshold under SURE. Under the new law, to qualify for payments, there must be a production loss of at least 10 percent for at least one crop of economic significance on the farm. Under the SURE program, the new law provides that when a second crop is planted after the first crop was prevented from being planted, or if such first crop failed, the second planting will not count toward the SURE program guarantee or total farm revenue. This is true except in areas where doublecropping is a normal practice. Producers also are not required to purchase crop insurance or a NAP policy for the second crop. By provision of the new statute, the purchase of insurance or a NAP policy for grazed acreage is no longer a requirement for the SURE program. However, such insurance is required as a condition for payment for the livestock feed program, tree assistance program and the emergency livestock, honeybees and farm-related fish programs. In addition, the new law amends SURE eligibility so that crop insurance or NAP coverage is no longer required for crops that are not of economic significance or those where the administrative fee required to buy NAP coverage exceeds 10 percent of the value of the coverage. 4C’s SENIOR CITIZENS Club members and guests met at Bolivar Golf Club, December 9th, for their Christmas Party. A buffet lunch was served which included roast beef and turkey. Officers for 2009 were installed. Regular meetings are held the second and fourth Tuesdays at Richburg Firemen’s Clubhouse at noon (except Nov. and Dec. which are only the second Tuesday). Often, there is a speaker or entertainment, and several bus trips throughout the year. Guests and prospective members are always welcome. BY David Uffington Wrapping Up 2008 Here are some things to think about as the year draws to a close. --Review your 2008 spending. Did you meet your savings goals? Are your miscellaneous expenses higher than you’d like? The new year is a good time to start again, with a clean slate, on household budgets and savings plans. --Compare your credit-card balances with a year ago. Did you make significant headway in getting them whittled down or paid off? Look closely at the interest rates you’re being charged. Do you need to pay off all but one card, one with the lowest rate? --Check interest rates on CDs and money-market deposit accounts at your bank. (This is not the same as a money-market fund, which isn’t insured by the FDIC.) If your money is languishing in a simple savings account, look for higher returns elsewhere without getting into the stock market. --Is it is smart to make a 13th mortgage payment? If you itemize on Schedule A, will the additional amount of the mortgage insurance deduction make enough of a difference? If you send an additional payment, mail it early enough to be received and processed in advance of Dec. 31. --Property taxes: If these are split into two payments, chances are that one is due this year and one in 2009. Pay both halves now and take the deduction for 2008. --If you make donations to charity, be sure to get a receipt and that it’s clearly dated. --How is your bill organization and check-writing working out? Do you need to devise a different way of making sure bills get paid on time, or for handling receipts and cents-off coupons? --If you have home-improvement plans you didn’t get to in the fall (and don’t have a houseful of relatives for the holidays) consider having the work done now. Prices are likely to be lower than at any other time of the year. Check references of any contractors (ask if you can go look at the work), get estimates and have finish dates in writing with financial penalties for delays. Be sure the contract states that payment will be made in increments as the work progresses. Q: I’m having a problem with my storm door not closing all the way. I think the problem is that the door is two steps from the landing, and everyone, including myself, has a tendency to pull down on the handle when we are standing on the outside landing. I have tried WD 40 and also reset the screws, but it continues to stop as it hits the striker and does not close completely. My concern is that the wind will get a hold of storm door and tear it up. Please help. -- Jack Z., via e-mail A: Try putting a shim (a thin piece of cardboard or wood trimmed to the same size as the hinge) behind the storm door’s bottom hinge and retighten the screws; this may lift the door the few centimeters it needs to clear the striker. You also should double-check the striker itself. See if it is loose, and if not, loosen the plate to find out if you can adjust its position slightly so that the latch engages completely. The door closer is probably not the trouble in this case, but double-check its attachment points. The screws may have pulled loose over the years and the closer’s position may have shifted just a bit, preventing the door from closing fully. If the closer needs to be resecured, replace the old screws with longer ones (about 2 1/2 inches) so the closer attaches to the frame more securely. Finally, check the condition of the door itself, including vinyl seals -they should be tight around the storm door, not bulging out. HOME TIP: To keep a storm door from slamming shut, adjust the tension on the door closer (the tube-like device set horizontally inside the door. There’s only one guy who should drive loaded. When it comes to alcohol, it’s easy to be fooled by appearances. But the fact is, an “innocent” 12 oz. mug of beer or a “harmless” 5 oz. glass of wine is as guilty of causing intoxication as a standard 1 1/4 oz. shot of hard liquor.
