Nelson Central School We e kl y N e ws l e tt e r
Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa te whanau whanui o te Kura Tuatahi o Whakatu – Greetings to friends and family of Nelson Central School. Nurturing success As parents we all want our children to be successful at school and in life generally. However, many of us are never quite sure what success means or how it might be achieved. It is not unusual for first time parents in particular to be hesitant about their role as parents let alone in their role as champions of success for their children. We have asked Brenda Holloway to come along to the school library on 24 March at 7 pm to talk about Positive Parenting for anyone who is interested – please see information panel elsewhere in the newsletter. Fee t First Now that this programme is underway we look forward to family participation in The Walking Wednesday. On these Wednesdays, children at participating schools are being encouraged to join walking school buses or walk to and from school with their caregivers or friends. Our walking data will be published on the Land Transport Authority website and we will be able to compare our success with that of other schools. Stationery fees and voluntary donations Thanks also to those people who have paid their photocopying fees and voluntary parent donation. T here has been a strong flow of people in the office using EFTPOS facilities to pay fees - your timely contributions to the business side of our operation is much appreciated. School Photos This Friday Heritage Photos will be here to take class and individual photos. To ensure everyone is prepared the schedule for school photos will be: 9am R11 9am R12 9:15 Ren 3 9:15 R16 9:30 R17 9:30 R7 9:45 R1 10.00 R2 10:15 R8 11:00 R13 11:15 R3 11:15 R5 11:30 R14 11:45 Ren 2 12:00 R9 12:15 R6 12:15 R15 However, please be aware that last minute changes can affect this. 7 0 N i l e S t r e et, N el s o n Principal:

To be born a girl This year as part of our citizenship theme we are learning about human rights in education. To remind us of how unfair life can be for some people I have reprinted Maya’s story from the United Nations Cyber School Bus website: My name is Maya. I was born 14 years ago in a poor peasant family. There were already many children, so when I was born no one was happy. When I was still very little, I learned to help my mother and elder sisters with the domestic chores. I swept floors, washed clothes, and carried water and fire-wood. Some of my friends played outside, but I could not join them. I was very happy when I was allowed to go to school. I made new friends there. I learned to read and write. But when I reached the fourth grade, my parents stopped my education. My father said there was no money to pay the fees. Also, I was needed at home to help my mother and the others. If I were a boy, my parents would have let me complete school. My elder brother finished school and now works in an office in the capital. Two of my younger brothers go to school. Maybe they, too, will finish.

I know I shall have to spend long hours working either at home or in the field. And then I'll be married. I have seen my mother working from early dawn to late at night. My life will not be much different.
