INTRODUCTORY LATIN (111) LATN 111 Fall 2009 Wichita State University MCLL G. Schwendner (PhD) Instructor Office 406 C Jardine Office Hours T-R 9:45-10:15 Phone 978-6004 E-mail: [email protected] Web: Blackboard Textbook: M. Balme, The Oxford Latin Course Part I and II (Oxford University Press) On-line workbook http://artemis.austincollege.edu/acad/cml/rcape/latin/ COURSE OBJECTIVES The primary focus of the course will be on reading comprehension skills, by use of paraphrase and translation and computer assisted language learning techniques. The ability to recognize (rather than produce) Latin morphemes will be of primary importance. A significant portion of academic and technical vocabularies in English are derived from Latin, or Greco-Latin items, and therefore, a secondary goal of the course will concern the derivation and application of these terms. Roman culture will be discussed as it applies to the textbook readings, supplemented by primary sources in translation and occasional videos. TESTING TESTS: two unit tests, after the fifth and tenth weeks, and a final exam ( 65% in all). QUIZZES: Weekly quizzes will cover vocabulary, morphology, and reading skills (16 total, 20%). The potential content of all quizzes and tests will be announced before the event: one (1) day before in the case of quizzes, one (1) week before in the case of tests. "Announced" shall mean on the BB site under the "ANNOUNCEMENTS" heading as well as mentioned in class. HOMEWORK and Class participation: 15% All grades will be posted on the Blackboard site at the end of the week 100-90 = A, 89-80 = B, 79-70 = C, 69-60 = D). CLASS ATTENDANCE "is taken and excessive absence is penalized," according to the written departmental policy. Late assignments may turned in for consideration, but less than full credit.

"The Dept. (MCLL) offers the possibility of retroactive credit subject to specific departmental rules. It is absolutely necessary to file a formal application in 305 Jardine Hall (the MCLL office) by November 28, 2005 (no extension beyond this deadline). For details, please consult with the office staff of MCLL." See, e.g. the MCLL homepage http://mcll.wichita.edu/ where there is a link to the proper form.
