Ramblings: Communication, communication, communication There is an old saying about real estate that goes something like, “The three most important things about real estate are location, location, location.” I am about to propose that with churches the three most important things are communication, communication, communication. Just think about it. Everything we do as a church revolves around communication. We are called to communicate the gospel message of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. We are called to communicate with our God through prayer. We are supposed to communicate the love of God in all we do, to everyone we meet. The church should be communicating with each other on the issues and opportunities for ministry that are available. Our church is blessed with a variety of activities and ministries for people to take part. We have groups for women (Celebration), men (United Methodist Men—UMM), youth (UMYF), children (Children’s choirs), families (Young Families), older adults (49er’s game group), and the list goes on. We have positions for people who are interested in helping people by using their God given talents (Anahuac Comeback). We have activities for adults to make a difference in the lives of children (Vacation Bible School). I could keep going for the rest of the column, but you
understand the message I am trying to get across. One of the questions I have had brought to me is “are we communicating all of this well? Do we make it easy for people to find out what we have?” My answer is “We’re trying and we’re getting better.” The new web site is part of that effort. Announcements on the screens before the services are another attempt to be better. But what I realized as I studied this problem is that as much as we need to communicate to people, we need communication from people. That is where the new communication card comes into play. This past Sunday we used the communication cards for the first time. Here is the difference that was made. I normally see one request for information on church membership a month. Yesterday I saw two. In a normal week we are told of a couple people who need prayers. Yesterday I received eight. This thing works! I am going to continue to press you to use the communication card each week. It only takes a moment to fill out, but it can make all the difference in the world. And for the skeptics out there, Yes, every card is checked and read. Every single one. We are serious about doing better on the most important thing we can do, communication, communication, communication. IGS, John
